Edmonton is a city on the rise, but what's the story behind the growth? As a Principal Monitoring & Analysis Planner, you'll provide analysis on the changes to Edmonton’s development and land use that reveal the full picture of Edmonton's growth and alignment with our strategic direction.

As a Principal Monitoring & Analysis Planner, you will play a key role in monitoring and analyzing growth patterns in Edmonton. This is a dynamic role where you will be responsible for initiating, developing, and resolving complex planning assignments that support decision-making for the city's physical, social, financial, economic, and environmental future. You will manage projects with a high degree of independence, and contribute to the city’s annual growth monitoring program and deliver key products.

Your work will focus on advancing the annual growth monitoring program, allowing progress towards The City Plan vision to be tracked. The growth monitoring program is well established and strives for continuous improvement. The position requires strong communication skills to convey complex quantitative and qualitative findings in an accessible manner, supporting evidence-based decision-making related to urban form.

You'll be a key player in understanding and showcasing how housing, land use, transportation, and population growth are all interconnected. You'll use data to make sense of these relationships, that will guide decisions for a city that's growing and evolving. Your insights will help build a more sustainable and dynamic Edmonton.

What will you do?

  • Lead the development and delivery of growth monitoring and analysis initiatives, applying your planning expertise and project management skills
  • Apply advanced analytical, statistical, and geospatial analysis skills to provide objective, evidence-based insights that go beyond basic planning theory
  • Interpret technical data outputs, skillfully communicating findings and trends to peers, leadership, and lay audiences
  • Craft and deliver reports and presentations that are easy to understand, concise, and logical
  • Write content for and conduct editorial reviews of the Annual Growth Monitoring Program to ensure all deliverables are accurate and of high quality
  • Manage projects effectively, including scoping, identifying resource needs, and developing timelines and methodologies
  • Provide technical and subject matter expertise on urban growth monitoring and analysis to support a variety of projects and inquiries from City Council, senior administration, and the public
  • Mentor students, planners, and technical staff


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning or Human Geography, Economics or a discipline with a focus on demographics, land use planning, economics, statistical analysis, geospatial analysis and research methods
  • Four (4) years' progressively responsible related planning experience


Assets:

  • Eligibility for membership in the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI) and Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP)
  • Designations, Certificates or Training in ESRI Suite, Tableau, Python, FME, and Adobe Indesign


Skills required for success:

  • Knowledge of spatial and statistical analysis, and projection techniques and software (e.g. GIS, Tableau)
  • Knowledge of planning principles and practices related to land use planning, land development, plan-making, urban development, development approvals and public engagement
  • A strong understanding of urban growth trends and their impact on a city's physical, social, and economic future
  • Experience in translating complex data into accessible and innovative presentations and reports for diverse audiences, including city leadership and external partners
  • Superior writing skills for documentation like report writing and project charter development
  • Ability to explore data and develop and test hypotheses using geospatial and statistical analysis software
  • Ability to accurately interpret data, draw sound conclusions, and develop narratives based on data
  • Skilled in crafting strategic communications to support a story arc emphasizing business area/department priorities
  • Ability to manage projects effectively, including self-directed work and work undertaken by other team members
  • Ability to learn and use new software

Work Environment:

  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Up to 1 permanent full-time position

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week.

Salary Range: $52.578 - $67.097 (Hourly); $92,629.29 - $118,208.14 (Annually)
