Purpose of Role: Weir Marine Engineering is currently looking for a Naval Systems Specialist (or Analyst) with current or former experience in underwater warfare and underwater combat systems to join our Combat and Control Systems (CCS) team at the Canadian Forces Maritime Warfare Centre (CFMWC). This permanent position, based in Halifax NS, is an analyst position that provides a range of services in support of Operational Test & Evaluation (OT&E) and Tactical Development. The analyst is part of a team initiating and undertaking at-sea tests, conducting technical investigations and validating system performance / tactics effectiveness. The position may also include collaboration and liaison with ongoing naval projects and equipment managers. Sound analytical skills, organizational knowledge, and previous work experience with the Royal Canadian Navy or Royal Canadian Air Force is important as the work often requires a collaborative approach with numerous RCN stakeholders. This position includes a combination of office (mostly) and shipboard (sometimes) environments with occasional requirements to perform work outside or onboard ships and occasional short duration travel to other test locations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analysis: Conduct analysis including the specification of test objectives, metrics, required resources, and test procedures.
  • Technical Support: Provide underwater warfare subject matter expertise with respect to RCN Underwater Warfare weapons, sensors, countermeasures, and combat management interfaces including working knowledge of RCAF Maritime Air platforms, weapons, sensors and tactics.
  • Coordination: Coordinate efforts directed at data collection, event reconstruction, analysis, reporting, data management, and support to modelling and simulation.
  • Teamwork: Must thrive in a collaborative and demanding work environment ashore and at sea. Due to the varied nature of work lines across multiple ship-submarine, weapon and sensors classes, the applicant must be able to both multitask and work collaboratively and harmoniously in small teams. Be able to both lead as well as contribute client adopted initiatives.

Job Knowledge/Education and Qualifications:

  • Mandatory: Eligible to obtain Government of Canada security clearance, which requires Canadian citizenship and continuous residence in Canada over the last 10 years as a minimum.
  • Mandatory: Work experience as RCN/RCAF/NATO Warfare Officer (currently or previous) such as Operations Room Officer (ORO), Tactical Coordination Officer (TACCO) or Principal Warfare Officer (PWO) with Underwater Warfare Specialization. Preference may also be given to RCN Combat Systems Engineering Officer (CSEO) or other civilian applicants with advanced degrees in Operations Research, Acoustics, or Oceanography.
  • Required: Operational knowledge of naval shipboard systems and procedures is desirable.
  • Required: Excellent analytical and organizational skills with attention to details and quality; Proficient in technical writing in English and ability to communicate effectively at all levels with peers, supervisors and clients.
  • Desired: Familiarity with naval operational analysis procedures.
