The Opportunity:

The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting to fill the permanent full-time position of Water Distribution Operator. Water Distribution Operators are responsible for day-to-day and emergency operation and maintenance of the Class IV Water Distribution system. Key accountabilities are to perform work functions that ensure compliance of established City policies and regulatory standards under the guidance of a supervisor, or Lead Operator. Distribution Operators possess a high level of safety awareness, reliable supply of high-quality water in the distribution system and customer service for water related issues.

As our preferred candidate, you will have:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Unrestricted Water Distribution Level 2 Alberta Environment Operator’s Certification or equivalent
  • Education or training in a one (1) year water/ wastewater related technical program is preferred
  • Minimum 4 years in operating processes of municipal infrastructure in a Level III or IV Provincial certified system or equivalent
  • Must successfully pass all safety certificate courses currently required and others to be defined by the Province or by the City
  • To maintain Certification, they are required to achieve 3.6 CEUs each 3 years.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License
  • Ability to work unsupervised and co-operate with colleagues as a team, to understand and follow instructions and to provide guidance and instructions to junior operators or Waterworks labourers.
  • Well-Developed verbal, computer and written communications skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computer aptitude including demonstrated proficiency with databases, spreadsheets, and word-processing software. Ability to maintain data bases and create reports.
  • This position is an important front line customer contact point and is responsible for responding promptly and courteously to customer complaints, investigating complaints on-site and interacting with customers to identify problems and to explain solutions.
  • Mechanical aptitude and the ability to accurately use a wide range of portable monitoring and laboratory testing equipment. Ability to take due care and attention when installing equipment without damaging exteriors of businesses or residences.
  • This position requires operators to troubleshoot problems and exercise critical thinking in the execution of their duties.
  • Must be physically fit in order to climb ladders, work at heights, open and close valves, lift, shovel, moderate physical exertion regularly in awkward positions.
  • Ability to work inside and outside in all types of weather and in conditions which may be noisy, dirty, wet, cold, confining, hot and disagreeable.
  • Ability to work in traffic to place barricades, signs, and traffic cones around work sites in traffic to protect operators and public while operating.
  • Demonstrated safety skills in the use of specialized protective equipment including respirators, and air quality monitors. Some work requires use of harnesses and hoisting equipment.
  • Be able to read and understand blueprints, drawings, schematics, and maps.
  • This position has a wide range of functional responsibilities and skill requirements, from hydrants to meters to customer service, and is required to be proficient with a variety of tools and equipment.

Hours of Work:

80 hours biweekly; Monday to Friday, some evening and weekend work may be required when needed.
