Responsibilities:
- Draft correspondence to clients, legal counsel and the courts
- Organize exhibits, documents, evidence, briefs and appendices for review and trial preparation
- File documents with applicable courts (electronic filing where applicable) and follow-up as required
- Manage client-related aspects including client relationship management; file organization and management; scheduling of conferences, mediations and arbitrations, appointments and meetings; diarizing files and various administrative tasks as required
- Draft court documents including Applications and Affidavits, Financial Disclosure Statements, Agreements, Orders and Pleadings as directed by the managing lawyer; prepare undertaking responses from questioning
- Handle regular and electronic incoming mail and other material, telephone inquiries and couriers, and co-ordinate the flow of information
- Handle routine accounting procedures: billing, cheque deposits/requests, time entry, etc.
- Manage lawyer’s calendar and schedule appointments
- Adeptly handle day-to-day issues to enable the solicitor to focus on settling matters
- Serve as a Commissioner for Oaths
Qualifications:
- Successful completion of a legal assistant program from a recognized educational institution with a minimum of 2 years related experience OR sufficient years of related experience
- Understand Alberta Rules of Court and Civil Litigation
- The capability to prepare routine legal documents without the assistance of a lawyer
- The ability to manage multiple files requiring interaction with a variety of people and types of information
- A strong organizer who consistently keeps files moving forward while juggling priorities within a fast paced, high volume, deadline driven environment
- High drive and initiative, self-motivated with a can-do and positive mindset
- Professionalism with a calm diplomatic approach
- Experience with Dictation and MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Experience with PCLaw, Worldox an asset
