Our Power subsector, a key component of WSP’s ERI (Energy, Resources and Industry) sector, supports clients from coast to coast. To meet our growth challenges, WSP is currently seeking an Intermediate Substation Engineer to join our Power Delivery team, located in our BC offices (Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo, Prince George, Kelowna or Kamloops).
WSP is a leader in the delivery of Power sector solutions to meet the increasing demand for safe, secure, and sustainable energy for Canadians which requires a substantial refresh and expansion of the electricity network. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise and consulting experience in T&D projects – specific to substations. The projects include, but not limited to, greenfield and brownfield projects, high-voltage utility systems and renewable energy interconnection projects. This role involves close collaboration with clients and stakeholders to understand their engineering needs, ensuring successful project coordination, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget while maintaining high standards of quality and safety. We work with both public and private sector clients on innovative projects, providing opportunities for our team members to showcase their expertise and mentor the next generation of passionate professionals. In this role, you will help bring WSP’s vast expertise, experience, and innovation to support our clients, utilities, and communities in the transformation to a new energy future.

What you can expect to do here:
Salary range (in British Columbia): $91,200- $125,400

What you can expect to do here:
- You will take technical ownership of all aspects of design for high voltage (69kV –500kV) substation projects including the development of:
- General Arrangements, Plan Views and Elevation Views, Grounding Plans, Cable Trough/Conduit Plans, Specifications for Major Primary Equipment (transformers, breakers, switches, etc.), Documentation for Design Calculations, Bill of Materials, Construction Sequencing Documentation;
- Perform the following studies: Grounding, Lightning, AC and DC calculations for Station Service and Battery System Sizing, Bus Fault Stress Analysis.
- You will provide Technical, Procurement, Construction and Active Coordination support;
- You will coordinate efforts with other various external and internal project team members, with familiarity in identifying when coordination is needed with certain design disciplines such as transmission line engineers, distribution line engineers, civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, and surveyors;
- You will identify key client interests and drivers and determine the key clients in some instances;
- You will act as a technical specialist for system protection and communication and has knowledge and skillset to provide consultation and guidance to project teams;
- You will maintain good working relationships with internal groups that support projects;
- You will maintain good working relationships with material suppliers, contractors, and any others that affect the quality, schedule and cost of projects;
- You will perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- You will guide and mentor junior engineers.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering;
- Registration as a P.Eng in your province of residence;
- Minimum of 5+ years of relevant post education experience in power systems substation electrical engineering, and familiarity with protection and control, telecom;
- Experience with all voltages 500 kV and below;
- Proficient with various engineering design tools and software (e.g. ETAP, Aspen OneLiner, EasyPower, PSCAD, PSS/E, etc.);
- Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment;
- Strong knowledge of electrical distribution and transmission systems, with a deep understanding of industry standards and regulations;
- Familiarity with relevant safety standards, utility codes, and regulatory requirements;
- Excellent communication, presentation, organizational and writing skills a must as candidates will be responsible for client interface and the preparation of project design documents including technical design, plan & profile, (structure spotting), staking sheets, contracts and specifications;
- Willingness to travel as needed for project assessments, meetings and on-site support.
