Opportunity
MacEwan University is seeking a Student Support Coordinator for a full-time continuing opportunity with our Student Wellness Services department. In this role, you will carefully assess the situation while responding compassionately toward reports of concerning student behaviour. You will also work collaboratively with institutional stakeholders to ensure the campus community's safety. You will serve as a resource and a role model in strengthening the capacity of all University staff to respond quickly and effectively to students in the early stages of disruptive behaviour and crisis.
Key responsibilities include:
- Coordinating and implementing codified response protocols to reports of disturbing or disturbed student behavior and ensuring there is continuity of care, compassionate response for students and role clarity;
- Coordinating key stakeholders and referring cases around high-risk situations to appropriate internal or external services;
- Preparing documentation and managing communications appropriately, within the scope of POPA, professional guidelines and policy;
- Encouraging students experiencing acute crisis such as suicidal behaviour, assault, trauma to involve their families and/or social support when it is appropriate and feasible;
- Ensuring a designated person for follow-up with students who are recently discharged from the hospital or returning to campus after an acute emergency;
- Developing educational materials and presenting at educational events, including workshops for staff and faculty on student crisis topics;
- Training faculty and staff to recognize early signs of student distress and connect students to appropriate resources early;
- Providing a skill-based emergency response and resilience-based competency training;
- Enhancing resources for students in difficulty or crisis including researching and disseminating appropriate models, relevant strategies, and effective/promising practices;
- Promoting after-hour emergency numbers across campus and supporting the alert system;
- Actively engaging security, housing, registrar’s office, accessibility, in the design and implementation of training modules for response to student emergency situations;
- Accurately maintaining statistics and analytical information to address any trending concerns; and
- Participating in and supports student life committee work, initiatives, and programming.

QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of an undergraduate degree in related field working in a complex and confidential environment.
- A minimum of 3 years working in a complex and confidential environment.
- Experience working in the post-secondary sector would be considered an asset.
- Extensive knowledge of suicide intervention, violence prevention, and current trends in early intervention and privacy legislation.
- Experience working collaboratively with individuals with various backgrounds and experiences, including senior administrators, faculty, staff, students and the community.
- Knowledge and experience in threat assessment and risk management, as well as mental health, behavioural issues and drug and alcohol issues would be considered an asset.
- Experience working with Microsoft Suite and other applications.
- Experience maintaining records of a sensitive nature and adherence to POPA.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
