THE OPPORTUNITY: ON-CALL CAFETERIA & FOOD SERVICE WORKERS
In Secondary schools , under the direction of the Cafeteria Kitchen Work Leader:
Food Service Workers must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills. They must be able to work independently and collaboratively with students and the school Culinary Arts Team . They have knowledge and experience in the operation of a commercial dishwasher and cashiering.
Duties:
- Knowledge and experience in the operation of commercial dishwasher including daily maintenance
- Cleaning of heavy scouring of pots, pans, racks, deep fat fryers, steam tables, refrigerators, freezers and other kitchen equipment for extended periods
- Perform general cafeteria cleaning duties
- Assist with maintaining inventory of paper goods and chemicals. Restocking, receiving, and putting away deliveries
- Responsible for daily machine washing, folding and storage of aprons, tea towels, dishcloths and ensures the laundry room remains clean and orderly
- Perform cash register duties or assist with serving food during lunch service and nutritional breaks
- Assist with daily general food preparation and catering
- Perform other related duties as required
Cafeteria Teacher’s Aide 1 must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, and basic computer skills for email and web-based application software. They must be able to work independently and collaboratively with students and the school Culinary Arts Team.
Duties:
- Prepare a variety of foods according to the daily menu
- Operate serving line with prompt, courteous and efficient service
- Oversee, direct and encourage student monitors assisting during the lunch service
- Evaluate and report on food quality on a daily basis
- Ensure safe and sanitary handling of food and equipment
- Prepare a list for ordering of supplies, determines the quantity of food required
- Maintain a record of meals ordered according to standard procedures
- Ensure proper receiving of all deliveries and addresses discrepancies with suppliers
- Ensure proper storage and handling of chemicals and cleaning supplies
- Clean and sanitize workstation, equipment, kitchen counters, food service area, and maintain workstation in a clean, neat and organized state
- Rotate stock and clean storeroom on a regular basis
- Collect lunch program money, count intake and prepare bank deposits
- Ensure student confidentiality regarding parental contribution
- Assist and perform duties of Food Service Worker as required
In Elementary schools , reporting to the school Principal/Vice-Principal, the Cafeteria Teacher’s Aide 1 will:
- Prepare nutritious breakfasts, simple desserts and meal accompaniments, following the BC School Food Tool Kit Guidelines.
- Serve meals, place orders using a computer, receive and store inventory supplies according to Vancouver Coastal Health Food Safe Regulations.
- Train and supervise students in meal service, clean and sanitize the kitchen and serving areas, as well as maintain records for the program.
Qualifications:
- Completion of Grade 12
- Extensive knowledge of kitchen and food service operations
- Experience working in a medium-to-large restaurant or cafeteria
- Valid Food Safe Certificate
- Excellent communication skills
- Computer literacy
- Ability to maneuver heavy objects (min. 25 lbs.)
- Experience working as a cashier
