Position : Manager, Cytology/Histology – Full Time

Position Summary: Is responsible for the management of the WRHN Histology and Cytology Laboratories and management of activities for the Clerical Office in accordance with policies and procedures outlined in hospital and laboratory manuals. The Manager – Cytology/Histology is also responsible for the preparation and monitoring of section specific staffing, operating, and capital budgets. With assistance from the Medical Director of Laboratories and Pathologists is responsible for assessing the department’s performance, identifying areas of deficiency and implementing remedial action as required. The Manager is responsible for oversight of ordering and monitoring of supplies and maintenance of equipment. The Manager acts as a liaison and resource for other laboratory and hospital staff. To be successful in this role, the incumbent must be able to plan, execute and monitor performance of the laboratory personnel and operations to ensure that performance meets the organization’s quality standards and commitments to the customer. The ideal candidate for this role will have a proven track record of success, combined with relevant experience, strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and harmoniously with all levels of interprofessional health care providers. The successful candidate will possess advanced leadership skills and change management skills, ability to influence and build strong working teams, effectively interpret and communicate relevant information and regulatory requirements in a clear manner. The successful candidate will act as a technical resource for the section within and outside of the hospital and promote the value and benefits of sharing knowledge and expertise to help others learn and upgrade their skills. Ideally, the candidate would have at least 5 to 8 years of bench level experience and a minimum of 5 years of management experience within a clinical/healthcare Laboratory environment. The candidate should have experience in financial management, budgeting, driving costs savings, improving operational efficiencies and staff productivity, leveraging quality measures and overall service improvements using relevant key performance indicators. Experience with process redesign using Lean and Six Sigma principles and tools would be considered an asset. Contributes to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.
Position Requirements:
- MLT with current CMLTO registration or Pathologists’ Assistant with a minimum 5 years of recent management experience
- Maintains expertise in all aspects of Pathology and works in partnership with Chief of Pathology.
- Participation in Joint Committees
- Summarizes and reports QI activities and results within the department and to hospital committees as required.
- Conducts client satisfaction surveys as required by accreditation standards.
- Provide support for the preparation of work schedules and time records.
- Liaise with vendors and representatives of commercial companies as well as the Department of Purchasing and Stores.
- Quality Assurance and Risk Management analyses and reports, Quality Improvement projects.
- Updating of procedure manuals.
- Review of routine maintenance of equipment maintenance, repair costs etc.
- Participation in preparation of Operating, Capital, Staffing and Support Budgets for Pathology.
- Escalates issues to the Integrated Administrative Director for support as required.
- Completes evaluation and performance standards on staff every 2 years.
- Responsible for hiring/performance management of staff.
- Relationship building within the organizations to improve the lab deliverables.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Regulatory Standards and Quality Programs such as IQMH, Accreditation Canada Diagnostics, CAP
- Experience with risk management strategies related to patient safety, healthy workplace, staff safety
- Creative problem solver with ability to handle complex issues
- Independent, assertive and results oriented individual
- Experience with training, coaching and mentoring staff

Preferred Requirements:
- University degree is an asset
- Management training, certification and University business credentials
