Based at Red Deer Polytechnic and extending to our satellite training sites, this role offers a unique opportunity to shape how simulation is used to enhance healthcare outcomes across the region.
As the Innovation Lab Research Technician, you’ll be at the forefront of evaluating cutting-edge simulation tools—including VR and AR platforms—and supporting their implementation in real-world training environments. Your expertise in virtual technologies and coding for content creation will help drive innovation and improve learning experiences. Position Responsibilities Market Intelligence and Research
- Conducts thorough market intelligence and research documents based on direction from Director, Business Development Specialist, Applied Research Specialist and/or Engineers
- Summarizes and presents the results of research
- Provides recommendations/information to Director for use in strategic planning based on research efforts
- Prepares research and business cases in collaboration with Innovation Centres team members
- Provides information to Director for strategic planning
- Works independently to gather market intelligence and research as well as technical tasks and find solutions
- Provide creative solutions and support project managers in delivering completed commercial prototypes and/or internal prototypes
- Communicate ideas, concerns, and solutions effectively in written and verbal platforms within the Technician area as well as within the Division, externally and with other areas of the campus
Technical Project Support
- Communicates clearly with the project manager and customer as to the purpose, plans and outcomes of the project for assigned projects in collaboration with Technicians
- Provides expertise in determining best route to take to achieve the customers objective
- Writes the scope of work for projects
- Assists with costing and determining the timeline of projects
- Clearly communicates the progress of the project
- Tracks project finances, including invoicing
- Sets up, tests and disassembles a variety of equipment
- Designs and fabricates simple and complex mock-ups, incorporating new developments and innovations in the market
- Maintains equipment within the scope of their training
- Solve problems on an on-going basis and make decisions that are often unique to the situation and complex in nature
- Acts in an accountable manner to the department, division, and the Polytechnic in all aspects of the job, particularly in matters pertaining to industry interaction
Maintain and support the lab equipment including software
- Tracks material usage and work orders for related projects in the Division and for the Centre for Innovation and Manufacturing
- Procures materials, equipment, supplies and resources as necessary
- Assists with the set-up of lab projects when required
- Ensures all set up is done to safety standards regulations
- Evaluate present lab equipment and executing necessary modifications to accomplish additional tasks outside of the original purpose
Health and Safety
- Keeps current with Safety regulations and communicate expectations and changes to instructors, students, and colleagues
- Maintains Safety policy within designated Shop/Lab areas
- Adheres to and implements procedures in accordance with Health and Safety policies and mandates
- Checks and maintains safety equipment.
- Provides or assists with training on safety procedures to new faculty, staff and visitors, assisting in evacuations or other emergency situations
- Disposes of hazardous waste in storage areas (i.e. antifreeze, used oil, gasoline)
- Maintains MSDS inventory and WHMIS records
- Reports on and communicate on safety regularly
Continuous Growth and Acquisition of New Skills
- Actively participates in training and professional development activities in accordance with goal and development plan and as they become available
- Actively acquires knowledge and regularly familiarizes self with policy and procedure in order to meet user needs immediately without misleading or misdirecting students to services
- Actively acquires knowledge and skills related to this position
Required Qualifications Two (2) years of post-secondary training, completion of a community college certificate including trades apprenticeships or equivalent. Program required for this role: Trades or Technology Journeyman or Red Seal
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid Drivers license and clean driver’s abstract
- Candidate should have excellent working knowledge of VR/AR technology and content creation (coding) is an asset.
- CET would be an asset
Salary or Hourly? Hourly
Salary $34.59 to $40.47 per hour
Benefits and Compensation Information An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory
holidays and benefits
