In this role, you’ll lead a dynamic group of engineers, technical staff, and Engineers in Training (EITs), supporting both daily operations and long-term projects. You’ll oversee key programs including our Gas Lab, materials quality assurance, and the rotational EIT development program. You’ll also provide leadership and support to cross-functional teams such as PMO, Asset Management, System Integrity, and Operations—ensuring smooth collaboration and effective project execution.
You’ll work closely with internal teams and external partners—municipalities, contractors, and regulatory bodies—to keep communication strong and projects on track. From staffing and budgeting to planning and performance tracking, you’ll play a central role in keeping our engineering operations efficient, safe, and forward-thinking.

In this role, you will:
- Supervise and provide leadership to a team of technical staff for ongoing operational support and capital projects including the Gas Laboratory, Standards Engineering Team and Rotational EIT program. This includes work related to Capital Sustainment Projects and support to dependent business units such as PMO, Asset Management, System Integrity, Property Services, Operations, Shops & Stores, System Capacity Planning and OH&S. Participates in short and long term planning, ensures training materials and knowledge base information are current.
- Provide direction and oversight to FortisBC’s Gas Lab business unit and system odourization plan. Lead the rotational EIT program on behalf of FortisBC, provide mentorship and leadership to the rotational EITs and coordinate with business units on the placement and job duties of the rotational EITs. Oversee the Standards Engineering team in Burnaby Shops and Stores and provide support to Operations while leading the materials and tools quality assurance and control programs.
- Maintain appropriate staffing levels in collaboration within the department as well as others; monitor staff work assignments to optimize resources, allocate, prioritize and distribute work to meet operational demands and service level commitments..
- Participate in selecting, orientating and training new employees. Provide coaching to support performance, quality and quality of work, and ongoing training and development of staff; manage attendance, identify performance issues and collaborate with others regarding disciplinary matters.
- Provide financial oversight including the management of costs associated to staff, facilities, software, vehicles, tools and equipment; review and approve invoices, third party contracts and internal service agreements. Investigate, resolve and report variances.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with internal stakeholders, customers, contractors, builders, municipal agencies, emergency response and environmental management personnel.
- Develops annual resource plan requirements and collects forecasted project requirements to determine staff levels, skill set and related workforce planning requirements in order to meet customer service/delivery expectations. Establishes key performance indicators; prepares, maintains and presents a variety of statistical reports and related performance information to others.
- Develops relationships and liaises with key internal and external stakeholders including engineering, regulatory, municipalities, government agencies and builder developers to ensure communication channels are strong.
- Learn the business processes and ongoing deliverables for each group within the team.
- Identify any gaps in the current processes and identify areas for improvement.
- Support staff in their technical development and improving oversight to support other business units.
- Develop roadmaps for any identified gaps in current processes for improvements and implementation.
- Support other groups within Engineering Services and identify opportunities for further technical support.
- Provide financial oversight of cost centre and management of costs associated to staff, facilities, tools, equipment and contractors. Supporting budgeting cycle for all Engineering Services cost centres.
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a relevant field from accredited post-secondary institution, plus 8 to 12 years related experience in a technical or supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Active registration with EGBC as a Professional Engineer.
- Demonstrated knowledge of engineering standards
- Demonstrated experience working in an unionized environment
- Demonstrated project management skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of gas compression and pipeline systems
- Understanding of regulations and compliance within a utility environment
- Previous project planning experience and project development required
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word/Excel/Project
- Demonstrated analytical skills
- Basic understanding of budgeting principles and economic analysis
- Demonstrated leadership and team building skills utilizing collaborative methods
