Compensation Details

  • Dir Sustainability 21: Salaries typically range from $147,760 to $197,013 annually, based on qualifications and experiences, plus a performance-based incentive.

Location:

  • Export Development Canada operates in a hybrid work environment, currently requiring employees to work in the office 3 days per week. (subject to change)
  • This role can be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa or from one of our Community Hubs located in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, or Vancouver.

Team Overview

EDC is seeking a Director of Climate and Sustainable Finance to join the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Integration Team. This individual will play a leadership and influential role in further developing EDC’s climate and sustainable finance strategy.

Reporting to the Chief Sustainability Officer, you will be responsible for the continued development and execution of EDC’s climate action plan. As a Crown Corporation, EDC has an important role in supporting businesses and large projects that contribute to Canada’s economy and international projects around the globe. EDC made a net-zero commitment in 2021 and is a member of the Net-Zero Export Credit Agencies Alliance (NZECA). We face a pivotal time of supporting industries and sectors of the future to increase Canada’s economic and climate resiliency while also balancing environmental impacts.

This role requires exceptional leadership skills, the ability to navigate and influence internal and external stakeholders, as well as credible technical expertise to engage and consult with business areas. This role leads a team of climate and sustainable finance subject matter experts.

Discipline Summary

  • Lead the development, execution and delivery of Climate and Sustainable Finance strategies at EDC.
  • Interact with VPs and Senior Executives to provide strategic advice on climate and sustainable finance. Identify climate risks and opportunities associated with EDC’s portfolio and help others understand the implications for EDC’s business operations, customers and reputation.
  • Identify relevant public policy trends, regulatory impacts (environmental, operational, and financial) and anticipate emerging challenges that may affect business operations.
  • Monitor and review activities of environmental groups, think-tanks, and other influential external stakeholders.
  • Remain informed of industry trends, providing research and analysis to internal stakeholders.
  • Engage on public policy on climate and sustainable finance topics, through national and international working groups such as The Berne Union, the Net-Zero Export Credit Agency Alliance (NZECA) OECD, etc, and with industry peers including Financial Institutions and Export Credit Agencies.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Be EDC’s representative as lead climate and sustainable finance expert.
  • Responsible for the development and execution of EDC’s climate and sustainable finance strategy
  • Work closely with the Director of ESG Policy and Research and the Global Risk Management team to assess climate risks (physical and transition) to EDC’s business.
  • Responsible for EDC’s Climate Change Policy.
  • Work closely with the ESG-Advisory team, providing support on complex financing transactions and guidance on due diligence practices.
  • Work closely with the Director of ESG Reporting to manage development of climate and sustainable finance metrics and public reporting. Provide input and support content published via EDC’s climate report and sustainable bond impact report.
  • In collaboration with stakeholders at multiple levels of the organization, continue evolution of EDC’s sustainable finance framework and reporting to support the deployment of capital that delivers environment and/or social impact.
  • Collaborate across business and corporate functions in the development and implementation of climate and sustainable finance objectives and programs.
  • Support EDC’s engagement with external stakeholders and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
  • Educate employees and management on climate and sustainable finance-related topics.
  • Establish the team’s priorities and plans, ensuring consistency with the corporation’s strategic direction, monitor progress to plan, identify gaps and implement corrective action plans.

What We Are Looking For

  • Minimum undergraduate degree in Environmental Science, Business, Engineering or a related field.
  • 10+ years demonstrated experience in a Banking or Risk function, preferably with a focus on sustainability or climate, or working for an organization in the energy sector. Candidate will need a strong understanding of banking/financial products.
  • Demonstrated experience of leading a large organization (preferably a financial institution) through setting of climate targets, net-zero sector pathways, understanding financed emissions data, and working with climate scenario analysis and science-based targets.
  • Demonstrated experience of leading cross-functional working groups through the development, implementation and communication of a multi-year climate action plan. Including the establishment of governance models and KPIs to measure and track progress.
  • Understanding of sustainable finance frameworks, (green, social, sustainability, transition, KPI) for a cross-section of issuers (corporate & public sector) as well as an understanding of climate accounting frameworks (e.g., PCAF, GHG Protocol).
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience of working with climate and sustainable finance methodologies and frameworks (e.g., TCFD, NGFS, ICMA Principles.)
  • Strong knowledge of global sustainable finance market developments (market trends, financial product development, structuring)
  • Demonstrated strong project management skills
  • Minimum 5 years of organizational leadership experience.
  • Excellent relationship and influence management skills with the ability to build productive relationships with senior leadership as well as internal and external customers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to inspire, motivate and mobilize their team and colleagues.
  • Ability to align and adjust milestones and targets to maintain forward momentum.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal, presentation).
  • Bilingual in both official languages (minimum B level)*.
