Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services (MHS) that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth/811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.
We access all communities in Nova Scotia in a timely and efficient manner with our fleet of more than 180 ambulances and support vehicles operating out of 60+ stations. We respond to 165,000+ calls annually across the province, which are actively managed through the EHS Operations Medical Communications Centre, the hub of all emergency (911) and non-emergency (hospital transfers) medical calls.
The EHS Operations LifeFlight program provides even greater accessibility by responding to patients on scene or through inter-facility transports by our critical care team via helicopter, fixed wing, or ground ambulance.
In addition, paramedics in Nova Scotia participate in various programs both urban and rural such as community-based paramedic programs, collaborative emergency centres, and emergency preparedness and special operations, to name a few.

Reporting to the Manager, Human Resource Business Partnership, the HRBP is both a strategic and hand-on role that provides full cycle Human Resource leadership on organizational initiatives. The role is critical in executing our people initiatives, providing great internal customer support, and driving HR functional excellence and process and program development and improvement. The HRBP is required to work collaboratively with other HR professionals across our Medavie Health Services and Medavie Inc. Canadian operations.
The HRBP offers innovative HR solutions to challenging human resources related issues faced by our business and will lead various special projects and programs in our operations such as province-wide HR initiatives. The HRBP plays a strategic part in supporting operational project teams from design concept through to execution, and will be required to lead joint committees with our union stakeholders. The HRBP leads and enhances the organization’s human resources by planning, implementing and evaluating employee relations and human resources policies, programs and practices.

Key Responsibilities
- Acts as the initial point of contact to assigned client groups for matters concerning day-to-day inquiries.
- Provides consistent advice, assistance and communication to supervisors and managers in matters of HR policies and procedures, conflict resolution, collective agreement interpretation, compensation/benefits, progressive discipline, etc.
- Provide advice on compliance with applicable legislation such as the Employment Standards Act, Labour Relations Act, Human Rights Code, and/or EMC and MHS specific policies.
- Carries out HR programs to effectively and consistently support the company meeting strategic business goals.
- Organize, plan and achieve results safely while managing competing and changing priorities.
- Create, plan and deliver HR program materials and internal policies.
- Work as a change agent in the development and execution of HR initiatives
- Leverage strong interpersonal skills in order to foster and maintain successful and influential relationships.
- Labour Relations:
- Chair bi-monthly Labour Management meetings handling all Step II grievances, conducting research, negotiating solutions, and communicating responses
- Report monthly and annually on grievance statistics, such as type, settlement, and withdrawals.
- Interact regularly with Union Agents
- Undergraduate degree in Business, Labour Studies, Human Resources or a related discipline
- CPHR designation, or equivalent preferred
- Minimum 8 years’ experience in progressively human resources generalist role
- Proven experience leading major Human Resources initiatives from implementation through to execution is required
- Previous experience working in a unionized workplace is beneficial
- Experience in healthcare preferred
- Experience with Workday human capital management system is considered an asset
- Human Resources Management – Graduate Certificate preferred
- The ability to understand business goals and recommend new approaches, policies and procedures to effect continual improvements in business objectives, productivity and development of HR within the company
- At rue hands-on approach as well as the ability to successfully monitor the “pulse” of the employees to ensure a high level of employee engagement
- Experience with rapid and complex changing work environment
- Passion for innovative HR solutions and process improvement
- Demonstrated experience driving process improvements and identifying specific skill sets required
- Strong project management skills; ability to lead projects at a network level to influence and obtain buy-in, and then drive execution and achievement of the right results
- Success in creating and driving effective employee relations, retention and reward programs
- The ability to be comfortable with high volume workload and not be afraid to “roll up your sleeves”
- A strong solutions focus and be comfortable working in an environment which demands strong deliverables along with the ability to identify problems and drive appropriate solutions
- Possess proven conflict resolution skills
- Strong internal and external customer service focus
- The ability to manage multiple proprieties simultaneously – oriented on results
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
