THE OPPORTUNITY

The Program Leader implements City-offered programs and events within diverse Recreation and Culture portfolios, such as Camps, Youth, Art, Drama, Drop-in Sports, and Active Living programming. Programs will be implemented based on prepared lesson plans and itineraries for various ages, abilities, and interests as applicable.
In the delivery of programs, the incumbent provides positive recreation and culture experiences through prioritizing safety, professional interactions, excellent customer service, and the integration of creativity.

Grounded in the application of corporate and professional policies and frameworks, this position integrates key principles and standards in their program delivery such as, but not limited to, High 5, Developmental Assets Framework, Fundamental Movement Skills, Creative Youth Development, and Playwork Principles.
This position receives day-to-day leadership from the Program Coordinator and reports to the Recreation and Active Living Program Specialist OR the Art and Culture Program Specialist.

This posting is for three casual positions. Salary range - $20.51-$24.38/ hour

RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Delivery
  • Finalize and adhere to program plans and prepare all required supplies, equipment; and, where required, confirm special guests and field trip contacts.
  • Provide and support high-quality, programs and events that meet identified program outcomes, standards and requirements.
  • Remain informed on all upcoming activities and events to ensure preparedness.
  • Support supervisor, and where applicable, assist in the promotion of Recreation and Culture Programs to the community.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with Supervisor in addition to attending weekly meetings.
  • Maintain good public relations and excellent customer service with all program participants, parents/guardians and stakeholders.
  • Create and foster a safe, welcoming environment for all participants, their parents/guardians and other contributors.
  • Lead program participants and volunteers in a professional, safe and engaging manner through following behaviours, standards, and identification identified in orientation.
  • Ensure a safe, clean programming space, prior, during and following a program.
  • Successfully complete pre-program training courses as required.
  • Support any and all programs or events assigned, including Canada Day and other special events.
  • Actively attend and participate in meetings, training sessions, and special events.

Program Administration and Support
  • Complete and maintain all required safety documentation, forms, reports and other administrative tasks.
  • Complete required janitorial and cleaning of workspaces where required.
  • Support the Program Coordinator where required.

Other Duties
  • Support other city-led events, including but not limited to: Canada Day, Alberta Day, or the Senior’s Strawberry Tea.
  • Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures, and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time.
  • Contribute to a positive safety culture by always acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies for staff and contractors.
  • Act as a steward of the City's Corporate Culture by following the “Values, We Live By”.
  • Perform other job-related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in leading (or in the delivery of) recreation, sport, arts, culture, youth and or related education programs.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in a child/youth related role.
  • Basic knowledge of the benefits and principles of arts, culture, recreation, physical literacy, and/or fundamental movement skills.
  • Basic knowledge of healthy child and or youth development
  • Knowledge in the principles of inclusion and diversity, including but not limited to, LGTBQ+, First Nations, special needs.
  • Ability to instruct, organize and supervise group activities for youth/teens and younger children in a respectful and fun manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to effectively communicate.

Asset Qualifications
  • Certifications in High Five (PHCD), Safe Talk, or Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
  • Enrollment in a post-secondary institution in a related field

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • First Aid Certification (Intermediate First Aid and Level C – CPR or equivalent)
  • Driving may be required, if required, a Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) and must obtain a satisfactory review of a three-year Driver’s Abstract, with a maximum of six demerits.
  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Spruce Grove (required upon offer and is a condition of employment).
  • High School Diploma with a completion of Grade 12.

Physical Requirements
Medium Effort
  • Climbing, ladders, balancing, crawling, crouching, depth perception/night, lifting, pushing, reaching (either, both arms), use of feet (for control), pulling, outside work.
  • Lifting up to 10kg (22 lbs) building.

Working Environment
  • Both outdoor and indoor work.
  • Monday to Friday; some evening, weekend and holiday work may be required.
  • Hours of Work: typically, between the hours of 7:30am to 5:30pm.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • Local Travel may be required.
  • Working in a busy public environment.
  • Noise Exposure - includes large groups of people, including children, scoreboard noises.
  • All employees shall act in a safe manner at all times and will report any unsafe conditions, procedures or acts for the benefit of the City. Continual adherence to the City Safety Policy is mandatory.
  • It is the responsibility of the employees to keep current on WHMIS and other safety-related procedures.
