Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Facilities Coordinator, this position will assist with daily operations to maintain various labour, trades and contracted activities related to the Legislature Grounds. This role is identified as a working supervisor with approximately 50% of the job working outside and 50% administrative. This position will be responsible for assigning and monitoring the work of in-house employees, wage staff and summer students. This position will administer, coordinate and monitor contract specifications and various activities of contractors providing services to the site.

This position will also coordinate and participate in work with in-house trades including grounds plumbing and irrigation. Through positive and effective communication, the incumbent will assist and provide supervision and facilitation services for special events, while ensuring staff, clients and visitors are provided an attractive clean and safe environment.

Key responsibilities for the Grounds Supervisor include but are not limited to:

  • Directing, supervising and communicating with full time, wage, and summer student staff regarding daily and weekly activities.
  • Ensuring all OH&S regulations and policies are being adhered to by staff and provide guidance to ensure staff safe work practices.
  • Assisting with event report preparation, special event set ups, strikes, flag raisings, vehicle and equipment maintenance schedules and various grounds maintenance issues during the week and weekends.
  • Providing assistance in maintaining the attractive appearance of the site, working within the parameters of the grounds maintenance program and budget, as directed by the Facilities Manager and Facilities Coordinator.
  • Troubleshooting irrigation issues and completing minor irrigation repairs.
  • Coordinating and participating in tasks involved with the set up of seasonal festive displays and maintenance of the skating rink.
  • Assisting with preparing job descriptions, job orientation/training, performance evaluations and verifying timesheets for GOA and agency personnel.

  • Good supervisory, organizational, communication, analytical, planning and writing skills.
  • Good computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe
  • Good understanding and knowledge of the applicable OH&S regulations and policies.
  • WHMIS training and First Aid training

Qualifications

Required:

  • Some high school education, related training PLUS 2 years related experience.
  • Physically able to perform the manual duties found in the position assignment.

Equivalency

  • Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

Assets

  • Trades journeyman certification, broad landscape, hardscape, trade and building maintenance knowledge gained through years of experience.
  • Ability to accurately estimate the resources necessary to complete a maintenance project where unskilled or semi-skilled labour.
  • Previous agriculture experience.
  • Plumbing, irrigation and turf maintenance experience.
  • Proficient with powered mobile and non-mobile equipment such as: UTVs (both with and without hydraulic attachments), tool cat, electric pallet jack, power sweeper, backpack blower, skid steer, and aerial work platform.

Notes

This position is a Permanent, Full Time role with the standard weekly work hours of 40, Monday to Friday (7 am – 3:30pm).
