Temporary K-8 Special Education Support Facilitator




The temporary K-8 Special Education Support Facilitator will work collaboratively with school and behaviour management staff to support inclusion within our classrooms. The position will receive a responsibility allowance. This position will receive a responsibility allowance as per the Elementary Collective Agreement. The end date is subject to change, however, this assignment will not extend beyond the end of the current school year.


Please note that this position may change during the school year to focus on the Empower program.




Under the direction of the Superintendent of Education, the facilitator will:

  • Collaborate with school and system personnel to ensure that the special education needs of students are met according to ministry standards, policies, and regulations;
  • Collaborate with SERTs, Principals and others to support special education program delivery and services throughout the system;
  • Enhance student learning by modeling evidence-based instructional strategies in classrooms and supporting SERTs through job-embedded professional development, in accordance with relevant Ministry Policy Program memorandum and other relevant policy guidelines;
  • Assist with elementary IPRC and IEP updates;
  • Train and Mentor SERTs on the use of assessments;
  • Assist in the monitoring of interventions across the system;
  • Work with the Special Education Consultant to meet the needs of students and reports to the Superintendent responsible for special education and/or designate;
  • Conduct diagnostic and formative assessment and analyze student learning needs and next steps;
  • Identify teaching and learning strategies that effectively address the diverse needs of students;
  • Design and deliver professional learning opportunities for staff;
  • Seek and provide professional learning resources, materials and information;
  • Assist students and classroom partners in the effective use of assistive technology;
  • Assist educators to implement effective teaching strategies in lesson design and assessment, with a focus on literacy;
  • Be familiar with student needs (ie IEP’s, BSP, ILP)



QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have three basic qualifications (primary, junior, intermediate)
  • Special Education Part 1
  • Religious Education Part 1
  • Training and knowledge in the area of learning disabilities and demonstrated ability to adequately plan for students identified with learning disabilities. Special Education qualifications in learning disabilities a definite asse



REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated ability to meet the needs of all students, especially those with Special Education needs
  • Proven ability to use differentiated instruction and assessment for and as learning
  • Proven knowledge and skills in addressing special education needs
  • Proven successful collaboration skills
  • Ability to incorporate technology into the teaching and learning cycle
  • Proven knowledge and ability to implement effective literacy teaching and learning practices that addresses student needs
  • Proven knowledge and skills in addressing specific learning gaps in achievement for students struggling in reading
