Professor Robert J. Vallerand plans to welcome one or two new graduate students for Fall 2026. The scientific-stream graduate program in psychology at UQAM (Ph.D. program 3091) is a continuous doctoral degree from the Bachelors degree. It has limited coursework and uses the apprentice scientist approach. The primary goal of this doctoral program is to train future University Professors in Motivation Science. Over 25 graduate students trained with Professor Vallerand are now university professors across Canada and Europe. Robert J. Vallerand is a Full Professor of Social Psychology, holder of the Canada Research Chair in Motivational Processes and Optimal Functioning (CRC) and director of the Research Laboratory on Social Behavior (RLSB) at UQAM. His publications on Google Scholar are available here: https://scholar.google.ca/citations?user=oIQ4S6IAAAAJ The students' research interests should preferably fall within the Canada Research Chair theme, namely motivational processes including passion for activities and their determinants and consequences. Selected students will benefit from a generous package, including free tuition (if eligible), paid teaching and research assistantships, and being part of a world-class research program Interested students are invited to submit their pre-application directly to Prof Vallerand through email to [email protected].   • a letter stating your background in research, research interests, and career goals
  • an up-to-date CV, including any publications and/or scientific presentations
  • your most recent undergraduate transcript,
  • a sample of previous papers in French and/or English,
  • please mention if you have applied for a scholarship, either to SSHRC or to FRQSC, for Fall 2026.
Selected students will be encouraged to officially apply to the University by January 30th 2026. Please note that it is not necessary to be perfectly fluent in French to study at UQAM. However, because French is the language of instruction, a working knowledge of French is important. International students are encouraged to apply, especially if they have received some funding from their own country.
