Your Role
The Parliamentary Bureau in Ottawa is looking for an accomplished, confident, steady Senior Producer with a wide range of journalistic, programming, digital, organizational and leadership skills to work on the assignment desk. Reporting to the Parliamentary Bureau Chief, you will be a key leader, sharing responsibility with the other senior producers for the smooth operation of the bureau, including staffing assignments and schedules, production schedules,
planning of news coverage and journalistic oversight.
We are looking for someone who has superior leadership qualities, demonstrated through the ability to solve problems, give meaningful feedback, and support our staff with guidance that is both respectful and inclusive. The successful candidate will not only be an important editorial lead, but also foster creativity and demonstrate the desire and ability to mentor others. This position involves planning and contributing to network coverage plans and requires outstanding news judgment, motivational skills, critical thinking and the ability to communicate decisions clearly, and working with senior reporters on story pitches and story development.

Key Tasks
- Generate stories for broadcast and online by assigning, researching, gathering, writing and/or editing.
- Work closely with producers and reporters to develop story focus, strengthen stories and shape and vet scripts.
- Plan, organize and coordinate coverage of daily news and events.
- Assign reporters, producers and associate producers to stories and provide guidance and support on stories.
- Work with Resources and Acquisitions to schedule and staff appropriate camera and technical resources.
- Execute on CBC’s strategic priorities around diversity and inclusion, the reflection of contemporary Canada and trusted journalism.
- Contribute to the planning and execution of election campaign coverage.
- Coordinate assignment and scheduling of stories with senior producers on television and radio programs and attend daily assignment and story meetings.
- Support the daily and weekly television and radio programs produced in the bureau.
- Plan, select and request, in collaboration with the Unit or Business Manager, financial and production/resource requirements for news coverage and advise on budgeting during program preparation, production and post-production.
- Exercise editorial responsibility as delegated by Management.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
- University degree or equivalent.
- Minimum seven years of experience of programming leadership, particularly at a national level which is directly related to the area of assignment.
- Cultural awareness and sensitivity.
- The ability to contribute to the diversity of perspectives on the team.
- Excellent organizational and administrative skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of and connection to a wide range of different and diverse communities and people across Canada.
- Openness to diverse perspectives and ideas, and differing points of view is critical.
- Someone who naturally embraces and strongly values strategy and innovation especially around audience engagement.
- Experience programming content for broadcast and digital audiences within a media organization.
- Excellent editorial judgment and critical thinking.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with journalistic standards and practices.
- Excellent writing, vetting and/or production skills.
- A creative, passionate ideas generator with experience developing and shaping daily journalism.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to coach, cultivate and bring out the best in everyone on the team.
- Demonstrated skills in the areas of conflict resolution, mentoring, talent recognition and development.
- A self-starter, independent, and self-motivated.
- Ability to work in a high-pressure environment and to tight deadlines.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing work patterns and methods.
