Job Description
Our EDO (Engineering Design Organization) is looking for an Intermediate Designer who is ready to join our growing Canadian Operations within the Transportation Group. This role can be based out of one of our Southern Ontario offices: Whitby, Waterloo, Mississauga, Markham, Kingston or St. Catharines.
The Transportation Group within GHD Canada works with Provincial, Regional, and local municipal transportation agencies, as well as select contracting partners, on large scale projects across the whole Transportation spectrum of highways, roads and bridges, transit and multi-modal infrastructure, and transportation planning. Our team provides integrated transportation services throughout the project lifecycle from initial policy, transportation economics and business case advice, through concept, environmental assessment, detailed design, construction administration and asset management support services.

- Successful participation in, and completion of roadway, highway and freeway projects, and/or multi-modal corridors including median LRT/BRT under direction of senior staff
- Producing design work in an integrated 3D environment that focuses on quality and meets or exceeds company and industry quality standards
- Applying technical knowledge and coordination skills to solve problems on complex multi-disciplinary projects
- Potential for acting as a technical lead or lead drafter for a defined scope of work
- Potential for contact and coordination with sub-disciplines and external agencies
- Supervising the performance of more junior team members
- Data Collection and Analysis: Collate and analyze data using preset tools, methods, and formats. Involves working independently.
- Solutions Analysis: Interpret data and identify possible answers. Involves navigating a wide variety of processes, procedures, and precedents.
- Applications Software Maintenance: Monitor, identify, and correct straightforward software defects to maintain fully functioning applications software.
- Personal Capability Building: Develop own capabilities by participating in assessment and development planning activities as well as formal and informal training and coaching. Develop and maintain an understanding of relevant technology, external regulation, and industry best practices through ongoing education, attending conferences, and reading specialist media.
- Operational Compliance: Develop knowledge and understanding of the organization's policies and procedures and of relevant regulatory codes and codes of conduct to ensure own work adheres to those standards. Obtain authorization from a supervisor or manager for any exceptions from mandatory procedure.
- Product and Solution Development: Carry out a range of product development and engineering activities. Use established systems to analyze customer needs and define and deliver products.
- Design and Conceptualization: Research and interpret data, trends, and benchmarks relevant to digital products/services design.
- Operating Machine or Equipment: Operate complex machines and systems, adjusting processes to optimize quality and productivity. Also responsible for generating solutions to complex inefficiencies.
- Quality Assurance Testing: Carry out a specified range of complex tests; interpret test data to verify that specifications are met and/or to identify remedial actions required to ensure conformance.
- 3 - 8 years' experience in road systems and/or highway design
- Post-secondary education in Civil Engineering
- MTO and/or Metrolinx experience is an asset but not required
- Interest or experience with new design tools and technologies such as BIM platforms, design programming, visualizations and automation are considered assets
- Experience with Construction Administration & Inspection are considered assets
- Design experience in the production of conceptual and detailed design models and related drawing sets for a wide range of transportation projects, including roads, highways, freeways and multi-modal systems
- Working as a team, receiving mentorship and guidance from Senior staff, and providing mentorship and supervision and oversight of Junior staff
- Large and small team collaboration. Communication with other disciplines (bridges, electrical, geotechnical, etc.) sub-consultants, municipalities, utility companies, other partners and clients
- Experience and working knowledge of corridors modelling with InRoads/OpenRoads and/or Civil 3D
- Good understanding of geometric design principles (i.e. TAC Geometric Guidelines), Ontario design standards (i.e. OPSS), roadside safety design, and client specific standards and requirements (i.e. MTO)
- Experience in design delivery within both conventional and design-build project models are considered assets
- Exposure or desire to learn using visualization software platforms (Infraworks, etc.) and design programming (Dynamo etc.) are considered assets but not required
