This position works in the Cameron – Programs organizational unit. This is recreation leadership work in the organization and implementation of a variety of social, cultural and recreational activities including children’s programming within temporary Cameron Community Centre and Charles Rummel Centre. An incumbent of this position supports the facilitation of program activities and services; provides leadership, coaching or instruction, supervises seasonal and part time staff and assesses program results and recommends changes as necessary to a supervisor. The Recreation Leader 2 will promote interest and participation in program activities while establishing and maintaining close liaison with community groups and the general public. The Recreation Leader 2 prepares promotional material and addresses various groups relative to program offerings and maintains records, activity reports, schedules, requisitions and equipment and supply inventories. Other responsibilities include enforcing rules and regulations and ensures that required standards of behaviour and safety are maintained in the facilities or areas serviced; identifying and assessing recreational, and social needs; and assisting a supervisor in coordinating and administering the programs within the facility and a satellite location. Participates in the recruitment of and gives guidance and instruction for recreation programs, ancillary staff and contractual instructors engaged in instructional or leadership tasks; makes recommendations for hiring, rehiring or dismissal of same; recruits, trains, directs and evaluates volunteers. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include the completion of a two-year Community Recreation program from a re5cognized Community College and some related experience; St. John's First Aid and CPR Certificates are desirable; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Sound knowledge of organized community recreation principles and practices as well as that of the recreational, social, educational and cultural interests along with the requirements and resources of the area or Centre served. A Recreation Leader 2 will have sound knowledge of the rules, regulations, procedures and policies governing the work performed, working knowledge of sports, crafts, arts and other pursuits related to various recreational, social and cultural programs, special events and resources of the area and centres served. Ability to organize, coordinate, participate in and provide leadership in recreational, social and cultural program activities; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractual instructors, volunteers, groups, associations and the general public; and to prepare and maintain records, reports and promotional material related to the work. A valid Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is required. Please note that a Police Information Check may be required for this position.
Schedule: 70 hours bi-weekly; Tuesday 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Wednesday to Friday 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and Saturday 8:45AM to 4:45PM.
