The Director, Engineering Modernization is responsible for leading the execution and delivery of the Modernization and Simplification across Canadian Banking Engineering to drive out cost transformation and re-investment of capacity and capital. This role is responsible for ensuring the reliable, resilient, and timely delivery of applications and platforms undergoing decommissioning, modernization, or digitization, while upholding operational excellence throughout the process. Requires strong financial acumen and a strong understanding and knowledge of Application and Infrastructure and their Total Cost of Ownership. Reporting to the VP, Canadian Banking Products Engineering, the Director partners closely with Business, Product, Technology and program leads to drive alignment on requirements, dependencies, and priorities and design and deliver the technical solutions that support the strategic outcomes of cost transformation and reinvestment capacity.

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

  • Lead engineering execution of Application Decommissioning, Digitization, Modernization, Vendor Rationalization workstreams and correlated simplification initiatives, ensuring a strong focus on automation, straight-through processing, quality, scalability, and stability.
  • Responsible to understand the Bank’s Infrastructure and Applications across all domains, with a strong understanding of the financial total cost of ownership and savings optimizations.
  • Partner with Business Leads, Product Owners, Technology and Program Managers to define and deliver solutions that align with Modernization objectives and key results.
  • Translate program strategy into actionable engineering delivery plans with clear milestones and success criteria.
  • Drive engineering best practices, including DevOps, CI/CD, observability, automation, and incident response across Modernization squads.
  • Champion a client-focused engineering culture that emphasizes value delivery, simplicity, and resilience.
  • Build and lead high-performing engineering squads, ensuring teams are properly staffed, skilled, and motivated to deliver outcomes.
  • Act as primary escalation point for technical risks, dependencies, and delivery challenges; implement mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure adherence to the Bank’s risk appetite, regulatory compliance, and operational controls throughout all program activities.
  • Oversee financial planning and forecasting of the modernization program, including operating and capital budgets.
  • Govern program-level investments against approved funding envelopes, ensuring transparency in spend and benefits realization.
  • Present variance analyses, executive dashboards, and financial reporting for Program Leadership and Governance Councils



Skills

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • University degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Applied Technology, or equivalent work experience
  • 7–10 years of engineering leadership experience, with a track record of delivering large-scale modernization and simplification programs
  • Proven experience in automation, simplification and AI (including Agentic)
  • Proven experience in platform resiliency, large-scale application retirement, and modernization
  • Strong background in DevOps, CI/CD, cloud, and modern engineering practices
  • Demonstrated expertise in financial analysis and ability to interpret complex financial data
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills across business, product, and engineering groups
  • Strong technical communication skills; able to translate complex technical challenges to senior executives
