Job Summary:

The Process Engineer (Mechanical) is responsible for developing, optimizing, and supporting manufacturing processes and mechanical systems across the extrusion, anodizing, and paint operations. This role combines process engineering, reliability coordination, and project execution to ensure that systems are designed, maintained, and continuously improved to achieve plant performance goals in safety, quality, productivity, uptime, and cost efficiency. The incumbent will collaborate with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to lead process optimization, mechanical system design, predictive maintenance initiatives, and capital project implementation while maintaining compliance with all CSA and corporate safety standards.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Lead mechanical and process improvement projects, including scope definition, equipment specification, cost justification, installation planning, and qualification of equipment.
  • Develop and maintain P&IDs, process flow diagrams, and equipment layouts for extrusion, anodizing, and paint line operations, ensuring accuracy and alignment with current plant configurations.
  • Design and perform system load calculations for chillers, heat exchangers, cooling towers, compressors, pumps, and piping networks to ensure proper sizing, safety, and energy efficiency.
  • Design, analyze, and troubleshoot hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including actuators, valves, accumulators, and control circuits. Support maintenance with diagnostics and failure analysis of hydraulic power units (HPUs).
  • Collaborate with maintenance and operations to improve preventive and predictive maintenance programs, reliability KPIs, and mechanical equipment uptime.
  • Lead or participate in root cause analysis (RCA) and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) to prevent recurrence of downtime events and improve asset performance.
  • Support condition monitoring programs using technologies such as vibration analysis, oil sampling, and thermography to identify early signs of wear or failure.
  • Provide engineering and reliability support for utilities such as compressed air, process cooling water, and HVAC/chiller systems, ensuring consistent capacity and safe operation.
  • Drive continuous improvement in process reliability, OEE, quality, and energy efficiency through data analysis, process standardization, and waste elimination.
  • Champion Kaizen events and structured problem-solving activities, identifying bottlenecks and executing countermeasures to improve throughput and consistency.
  • Develop and document standard operating procedures (SOPs) and mechanical maintenance standards to ensure consistent operation and safety compliance.
  • Research and prepare Engineering Request Forms (ERFs) and project proposals with detailed technical and financial justifications for new equipment and upgrades.
  • Coordinate vendor and contractor activities for installation, commissioning, and validation of new systems, ensuring compliance with CSA and mechanical design codes.
  • Participate in long-range process and facility planning, including capacity assessments, future-state layouts, and cost-saving initiatives.
  • Work closely with Production, Maintenance, Planning, and Purchasing departments to align project execution with operational priorities.
  • Provide engineering expertise and technical leadership during troubleshooting of complex mechanical or process issues on the plant floor.
  • Develop and track process and equipment performance metrics, including uptime, mean time between failure (MTBF), and mean time to repair (MTTR).
  • Facilitate the achievement of key business metrics and production KPIs, including OEE, on-hours, throughput, scrap reduction, and energy consumption.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate, CSA, and provincial safety and environmental standards in all design and project activities.
  • Maintain a high level of technical knowledge of emerging mechanical technologies, materials, and reliability tools, and identify opportunities for integration into plant operations.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and coaching to maintenance and operations personnel regarding new systems, process changes, and reliability practices.
  • Support continuous improvement culture by promoting a proactive, data-driven approach to process stability, asset health, and operational excellence.

Qualifications

You have: (required) Bachelor’s degree in engineering (preferably in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering), or an Engineering Technologist with equivalent experience in mechanical, process, or reliability engineering.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in process, project, or reliability engineering within manufacturing, metals, or process industries.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical system design, hydraulics, pneumatics, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office; familiarity with ERP, CMMS, or project management tools is an asset.
  • Knowledge of industrial cooling, compressed air, and hydraulic systems (chillers, heat exchangers, compressors, cooling towers).
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in OEE, downtime tracking, and equipment reliability metrics.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively work with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced manufacturing environment

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in aluminum extrusion, mine/metal or continuous manufacturing environments.

  • Exposure to predictive maintenance technologies, reliability engineering, continuous improvement, and Kaizen methodologies.
  • Demonstrated success in capital project planning, execution, and contractor management.
  • Understanding of reliability-centered maintenance (RCM), failure analysis tools, and statistical process control.
  • Practical experience with energy optimization, utility systems, and sustainability projects in an industrial environment.

Benefits:

  • Competitive wage
  • Relocation offered
  • Comprehensive health and dental benefit package
  • RPP contribution
  • Annual Performance pay bonus
