Position Summary

The Survey Assistant supports the Survey Manager and field survey team in conducting accurate measurements and data collection for rail construction and maintenance projects. This role involves assisting with the preparation, operation, and maintenance of survey equipment, as well as ensuring data is recorded and reported with precision. The Survey Assistant plays a key role in ensuring that track alignments, elevations, and project specifications are met in compliance with PNR RailWorks’ safety and quality standards.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist surveyors in conducting railway track construction or engineering surveys.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate survey instruments (such as total stations, GPS equipment, levels and Amberg trolley).
  • Mark and measure distances, elevations, and boundaries at survey sites.
  • Collect field data and record measurements accurately.
  • Assist in preparing sketches, notes, and detailed field reports.
  • Transport, load, and unload survey equipment and ensure it is maintained in good condition.
  • Provide support in laying out reference points and construction markers.
  • Follow safety procedures and ensure compliance with company and site-specific safety regulations.
  • Work collaboratively with surveyors, project management, and construction teams on projects.
  • Perform basic data entry and assist with transferring field data into computer systems or CAD software.
  • Maintain confidentiality of project data and respect client property and information.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (post-secondary in geomatics, surveying, or civil engineering technology considered an asset).
  • Previous experience in surveying, construction, or rail industry preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with GPS and survey equipment considered an asset.
  • Strong mathematical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and travel to job sites as required.
  • Strong commitment to safety and teamwork.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Primarily field-based role, working outdoors on rail construction and maintenance sites.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions and physical work environments.
  • Travel required across Quebec and potentially other regions.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times.
