Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Automation Team Leader, the BAS Technician is responsible for on field commissioning. In this role, you will be responsible for bringing BAS projects to life-ensuring systems are installed, programmed, tested, and commissioned to meet design intent, operational performance, and customer expectations. This role involves working directly at customer sites, interfacing with project managers, engineers, contractors, and end-users to validate that control systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Commissioning

  • Conduct field commissioning of building automation and HVAC control systems, ensuring sequences perform according to design specifications.
  • Upload, download, and verify control system programs and graphics.
  • Test, troubleshoot, and calibrate field devices including sensors, actuators, and controllers.
  • Verify point-to-point wiring, sequences of operation, and system performance.
  • Document commissioning results, generate punch lists, and ensure issues are resolved prior to project closeout.
  • Collaborate with project managers, coordinators, installers and designers to meet project timelines and specifications.
  • Provide technical support and system training to customers and end-users.
  • Maintain compliance with company safety policies and customer site requirements.

System Diagnostics & Troubleshooting

  • Prioritizes safety when diagnosing, starting up, and commissioning systems to avoid risks and ensure secure operations.
  • Understands how HVAC systems work as a whole and uses this knowledge to identify problems, start up, and commission systems effectively. Provides practical solutions to fix issues or improve the system's performance.
  • Monitor systems remotely via Building Automation Systems (BAS) to diagnose and address mechanical or technical issues impacting occupant comfort.
  • Respond to on-call support on a rotational basis to resolve customer issues promptly during off-hours, including evenings and weekends.

Customer Service

  • Provides excellent customer service and develops key customer relationships by providing proactive service and recommendations.
  • Communicates effectively with customers and team members on work being performed.

Ethics and Values

  • Adheres to the company's values and code of ethics, demonstrating professionalism and integrity in all aspects of the role.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 2-5 years' of experience in BAS, HVAC controls, or related commissioning work.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, mechanical equipment, and control theory.
  • Hands-on experience with control system programming, calibration, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with major BAS platforms (e.g., Tridium Niagara, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, Schneider, or equivalent).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams, control drawings, and sequence of operations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently in the field.
  • Excellent communication skills for customer interaction and reporting.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to customer job sites.

Working Conditions May Require

  • Adheres to safety protocols during all tasks to minimize risk and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Frequent travel to job sites to commission projects and troubleshoot issues.
  • Working overtime outside normal working hours as required.
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs. unassisted when required.
  • Working in environmental conditions including heat/cold, noise, and inclement weather similar to construction job sites.
  • Completing repetitive motion tasks and intense concentration or focus (e.g., analyzing mechanical and electrical drawings, troubleshooting control systems, installing electrical wiring).
  • Climbing a ladder, reaching, and bending during installation.
