Under the supervision of the Pharmacy Operations Manager, the Intake Pharmacy Assistant works under the guidance of the Pharmacist on duty to:
- Process new and refill prescriptions
- Assist with refill scheduling
- Program infusion pumps
- Assist with infusion supplies requirements
Duties And Responsibilities
- Assist the pharmacist in maintaining federal, provincial, and local laws, accrediting body standards, and Policies and Procedures (P&Ps)
- Schedule patients for repeat medications
- Perform prescription data entry to track drug lot numbers as required
- Assist the pharmacist in preparing required infusion supplies for delivery of medication
- Assist the pharmacist in programming pumps and infusion devices for medication delivery
- Assist the pharmacist in entering prescriptions into the prescription software (Kroll), and filling/billing such prescriptions
- Assist the pharmacist in filling refill medications through the prescription software (Kroll)
- Assist the pharmacist in preparing compounding sheets for the preparation of medication
- Assist the pharmacist in the preparation and labeling of medications as allowed by law
- Maintain pharmacy records including filing and documenting required information on dispensing records
- Clean work areas routinely in accordance with policies and procedures
- Communicate appropriately with all members of the healthcare team
- Document appropriately according to P&Ps, all activities using required paperwork (logs)
- Participate in Performance Improvement and Quality Assurance activities, education programs, and department/branch meetings
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Certificates, and Experience
- University degree or diploma in a related discipline plus relevant experience
- Pharmacy Assistant Certificate/Diploma from an accredited institution is preferred
- Under no circumstances may a pharmacy assistant mix medications or provide service without a licensed pharmacist present
- Current CPR certification required if involved with direct patient care
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals
- Ability to understand basic medical terminology
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent
- Must be able to perform basic algebraic calculations
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
- Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations

- Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines
- Strong communication and presentation skills
- Experience providing detailed reports using MS Excel and internal forms
- Regularly required to talk or hear
- Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands to mix drugs, use computer and other equipment, and reach with hands and arms
- Vision requirements include close vision, colour vision, night vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
- Lifting required as per employee capacity; employee must notify Supervisor regarding any health issues that may affect ability to lift
- May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles while performing duties
- Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
- Occasionally works near moving parts
- Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
