The Publishing Intern is responsible for a number of essential tasks within the development processes. Reporting to the Director of Operations, this role offers an exciting opportunity to dive into the heart of publishing with duties that include:
What You’ll Do:
- Assist the production team in preparing publications to be print ready.
- Assist sales and marketing teams with early research about a book’s audience and identify potential sales channels.
- Assist the Managing Editor with assembling artistic briefs, writing alt text/proofing alt text.
- Assisting the Managing Editor in researching a pool of potential artists, designers, and contract workers.
- Assist the Managing Editor with early design preparation tasks (image mapping, alt text, tagging review etc).
- Attend internal development meetings, title meetings and all staff meetings.
- Small design jobs (updating digitals, updating pages, reprint corrections, creation of examination copies etc).
- Assist sales and marketing teams with early social media planning and book publicity plans, including early metadata creation.
- Copy writing, copy editing, proofreading duties as required.
- Assist the Managing Editor, sales and marketing teams with catalogue preparation and review work.
- Assist sales and marketing teams as required.
- Assist the Office Manager with shipping and receiving duties as required.
- Assist at book launches and publishing events as required.

- Undergraduate degree
- Two years of related experience.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Skills That Will Ensure Your Success in the Role:
- Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office software, email applications, typography, Adobe Creative Suite, and other design software.
- Strong interest in current events.
- Strong internet research skills.
- A passion for books and reading.
- Ability to complete assigned tasks, to prioritize and meet deadlines in a busy work environment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team-driven environment and maintain productive work relationships.
- Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous and racialized communities.
- Strong InDesign, Adobe Acrobat Pro and skills.
- Strong understanding of social media practice and tools.
- Basic knowledge of publishing metadata.
- Photoshop and Illustrator experience are a plus.
- Though not required, the intern should be willing to learn about Accessibility Standards in publishing. They will partake in the Benetech Borne Accessible recertification process with other staff.
- Demonstratable copy-editing and proofreading skills are desirable.
- Strong sense of graphic design principles and knowledge of typography experience would be amazing.
