Job Summary A unit of the Division of Student Affairs, the Student Accessibility Centre is Dalhousie’s centre of expertise on student access, inclusion, and accommodation matters. The Centre is responsible for administering the university-wide Student Accommodation Policy, working collaboratively across all Programs and Faculties to create and sustain an inclusive educational environment for students. Reporting to the AVP Student Engagement and Success, the Associate Director, Student Accessibility Centre oversees the daily operations of the Student Accessibility and Mark A. Hill Centres
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide 1-1 advising support to facilitate access to academic courses and programs, facilities, services, and activities. Advocate on behalf of, and alongside students to support their transition into and through their academic program.
  • Develop and ensure the implementation of student accommodation plans which reflect the university’s duty to accommodate.
  • Work collaboratively with other Dalhousie departments, faculties, and Student Affairs colleagues to develop strategies to address student accessibility challenges.
  • Develop, oversee and report on current budgets. Adjust annual operating budget allocations to respond to changing circumstances and priorities as appropriate.
  • Accountable for all aspects of management for eight full-time staff, and over 40 student employees including recruitment, development, performance management, discipline and discharge.

Note There is a requirement for this position to work a flexible schedule including days, occasional evening and weekend assignments.

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a related field (e.g. Education, Equity and Social Justice), ideally with a clinical background (e.g. Occupational Therapy, Social Work, Counselling), plus five years’ experience working with students (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Demonstrated financial and personnel management experience.
  • Previous experience in human rights advocacy, student advising, and/or disability support.
  • Demonstrated experience in a complex case environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with excellent interpersonal skills to interact with diverse constituents and to provide high quality support to students.
  • Strong organizational skills to prioritize workload and provide advising to assigned students in a timely, student-focused manner.

  • Experience working in a post-secondary setting.
  • Experience supervising a team in a unionized environment.
  • Experience in and/or knowledge of clinical settings.
  • Experience in program planning and assessment.
