Position Description

St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton is an Academic Health Science Centre affiliated with McMaster University and a tertiary referral centre for Central South Ontario offering services at three main sites, including St. Joseph's Hospital (Charlton Campus), the Centre for Ambulatory Health Services (King Campus), and the Margaret and Charles Juravinski Centre for Integrated Healthcare (West 5th Campus). Internationally renowned tertiary-care respiratory disease referral center.

The successful candidate will work alongside a team of physicians, physician assistants, and nurses with expertise in the realm of lung disease.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Physician Assistant (PA) will work collaboratively with a team of physicians, in the realm of lung disease, with a focus on patients with advanced lung disease, including aspects relating to both Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) and Pulmonary Hypertension (PH). Under the delegation of a Supervising Physician(s), the PA is authorized to extend physician services through the comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, intervention, referral, management, treatment, and evaluation of patients requiring acute health services in the outpatient setting.

The PA will be responsible for a variety of patient care, communication, and patient education activities including:

  • Review, examine, and assess patients with a primary respiratory complaint in a busy outpatient clinic environment
  • Field patient phone calls related to their medication regimen, management of adverse medication side effects, and intercurrent illness
  • Review bloodwork for patients managed in the clinic
  • Patient and caregiver education regarding medications prescribed
  • Medical documentation in hospital electronic medical record
  • Management and prescription of home oxygen therapy as indicated.
  • Ordering diagnostic investigations for patients seen in the clinic
  • Medical directives will include:
    • Prescription of medications commonly used to treat acute respiratory illnesses
    • With appropriate training performance of thoracentesis


QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Graduate of an accredited Canadian or US Physician Assistant training program
  • Certification (CCPA or PA-C) or eligible for certification through the PA Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or United States (NCCPA)
  • Experience managing and evaluating patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) strongly preferred
  • Demonstrates superior communication skills
  • Demonstrates support for the Mission Statement of St Joseph’s Healthcare
  • Preference given to applicants with previous respirology or internal medicine experience
  • Able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary healthcare team environment
  • Able to work independently within their scope of practice and within the physician-PA relationship
  • Will bring energy and enthusiasm to this position
