Job Description

In this role, you will collaborate with a team to execute project plans related to optical systems and test systems, ensuring all engineering requirements are fulfilled. You will provide technical assistance to fellow engineers, troubleshoot issues, and lead or contribute to the development of innovative solutions for complex customer challenges. This position requires a blend of hands-on, in-person laboratory work and activities outside the lab, including conceptual discussions and model-based analysis, to support team members and complete your own independent tasks.

You will report directly to one of our Sr Engineering Managers and you will work out of our Cambridge location in Canada.

Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

This includes hands-on, in-person laboratory work with physical configurations, as well as collaborative support outside the lab, involving conceptual discussions, optical modeling, and mathematical analysis.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of project plans related to the building and testing of optical hardware including telescopes, fiber assemblies, and laser systems.
  • Design, assemble and operate optical test setups using various tools including interferometers, integrating spheres, spectrometers, various optical sensors, and light sources such as lasers and lamps, across different wavelengths.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex engineering problems related to the manufacturing and testing of optical systems.
  • Contribute to the development of build and test documentation throughout all project phases, including planning and design prior to execution, as well as reporting and data analysis following execution to accurately document procedures and results.
  • Ensure adherence to quality and safety standards and customer requirements.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance engineering processes and efficiency.

Qualifications

YOU MUST HAVE

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as the sciences, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant design and test experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience in breadboard, laboratory, or operational optical systems. Experience with free space optical systems is preferred.
  • Experience with data analysis and simulation software for data post-processing of test data and developing simulations for optical systems in response to varying parameters to support test development and execution. Proficiency in MATLAB is preferred.
  • Basic familiarity with the capabilities and uses of industry standard optical simulation tools such as Zemax, Code-V, Light Tools, TracePro, etc.

The Honeywell building is a controlled goods program environment. Candidates must be eligible for CGP and CSP clearance.

WE VALUE

  • Optical simulation experience (Zemax, Code-V, Light Tools, Trace Pro, and other industry standard tools).
  • Experience with space missions.
  • Experience with free-space optical communications.
  • Experience with fiber lasers and/or Class 4 lasers in a breadboard, laboratory, or operational environment.
  • Experience with the complete engineering lifecycle (design to volume production)
