About Us
The Master of Financial Economics (MFE) Program is a four term, course-based professional masters program. The MFE is an interdisciplinary program offered jointly by the Department of Economics, Ivey Business School, Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences and Faculty of Law. The objective is to provide graduates with the analytical and quantitative skills to pursue careers in finance with potential employers such as banks, pension funds, regulatory institutions, investment banks, and related financial institutions.
Responsibilities
The Master of Financial Economics (MFE) Career Services Officer develops and implements programming that educates students and connects post-degree students to employers in the local, regional, national and international community. The Career Services Officer works in collaboration with the MFE Program Director and the MFE Program Coordinator to assist students with their professional development and internship opportunities. The Career Services Officer provides one-on-one consultations with students to review resumes and cover letters, and provides individualized advice that facilitates internship searches, searches for industry-specific job postings and shares job opportunities with students, conducts job-specific practice interviews to assist students with improving their interviewing skills, delivers the Professional Development Series, and shares updates/reports to the Director and Coordinator on both student and project progress. The role requires active participation and relationship development in a number of communities, including internal and external stakeholders, and contributes to the unit’s goals around increasing the visibility of the MFE program, as well as the profile of the students and graduates.
Qualifications
Education:
- Undergraduate degree in a Social Science, Business or a related field
- Master's degree in counselling (e.g. Master of Education/Master of Arts in Counselling, Master of Social Work), higher education administration, student affairs, or related field is preferred
- Career Development Practitioner Certificate or CHRP designation would be an asset
Experience:
- 5 years of experience in a career counselling related environment, preferably in an academic setting
- Experience developing workshops or classes, and/or public speaking experience in an academic setting
- Experience in the finance sector and/or corporate recruiting preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of and understanding of Finance sector hiring timelines
- Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
- Interviewing skills to counsel students and address problems, questions or concerns, including active listening, empathy, and building rapport with students and external stakeholders
- Ability to discern needs and expectations to provide accurate and appropriate guidance and support.
- Ability to handle complex, ambiguous situations with diplomacy, calmness, and good judgment
- Strong proof-reading skills with an ability to process information with a high degree of accuracy
- Professional manner, tact, diplomacy, and discretion in dealing with students, associates and colleagues including senior management in the financial sector
- Motivation and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments in HR and recruitment industry practices (e.g. video interviews, the use of AI in job searches/resume improvement)
- Ability to work independently and exercise a high degree of initiative, innovation and good judgment in decision-making
- Ability to think innovatively and to propose and initiate new programming ideas or service delivery models that meet the needs of a diverse range of clients
- Ability to work independently and maintain direction and focus through proactive planning and organized approaches to work
- Willingness to travel within Ontario for various program events and meetings with employers
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students, and the public
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and confidence dealing with all levels of an organization
- Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook (knowledge of Access would be an asset)
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development
