Opportunity

MacEwan University is seeking applicants for Security Services Agent positions for full-time continuing opportunities with the Security Services department.

You will exercise authority being licensed under the Security Services and Investigators Act of Alberta. Delivering services outlined in the university Security Services policy (D5040) and are responsible to work within applicable legislation, university policy and procedure, the Criminal Code, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and all other provincial/federal legislation. You will work to diminish any risk to the safe learning environment on campus and to protect MacEwan's assets. You will be required to engage in community response and community problem solving initiatives. We may hire up to nine Security Services Agents.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Responding to alarms, issues with plant systems, emergency telephones and use CCTV (camera) systems;
  • Providing information to staff, students, contractors, patrons, and visitors on request or proactively when noticing a person in need;
  • Performing access control duties including but not limited to; door unlocks and lock-up, notifying and assisting with the removal of unauthorized individuals to leave the buildings, and perform building checks (interior) to ensure there are no intruders;
  • Conducting investigations of reported incidents where there is a suspected breach of university policy; this may include taking statements, photographing scenes, gathering physical evidence, protecting a crime scene for police response, writing detailed notes, and entering all information into MacEwan's incident management software;
  • Performing extensive interior, exterior, and licensed-area foot patrols, climbing stairs, handling potential physical confrontations
  • Conducting shift debriefs with the on-coming shift members to ensure effective communication is provided to alert shift activity or incidents that may require further attention/work or to make the on-coming shift members aware of activity or risks that may be expected;
  • Assisting Parking Services and performing safe-walks within a two-block campus radius;
  • Providing front counter service, log lost & found, writing reports, complying with FOIP policies
  • Ensuring all material handed over to external police agencies comply with university FOIP procedures and a completed law enforcement disclosure form is signed by the police and is on file/scanned in the report;
  • Continually monitoring activity during the patrols on campus and leased property and apply the appropriate response to maintain a safe learning environment that may include enforcement of university policy, municipal legislation, limited authorized authority under provincial legislation, and arrest for trespassing or for criminal violations;
  • Using the 10-codes and the phonetic alphabet to report all activities and requests over the radio system while on patrol or responding to a call for service;
  • Responding to calls for medical assistance by providing first aid, maintaining the safety of the person, granting access for EMS/fire/police and supporting evacuations during emergencies; and
  • Educating and mentoring the campus community on safety programs, prevention initiatives and security issues through informal engagement during patrols.

SKILLS

You will have:

  • Working knowledge of Security practices and legislation covering authorities granted to the Security Agents;
  • The ability to engage in a physically demanding role, required to be physically fit and participate in annual self-defense training and fitness testing;
  • The aptitude to follow instructions and to read and interpret policy/legislation;
  • Strong interpersonal skills to be able to maintain cooperative and professional relationships within the Security Services team;
  • The expertise to use logic and reasoning when providing service to clients;
  • The competency to quickly evaluate, prioritize, and deliver effective service;
  • Strong report writing and verbal communication skills;
  • The capability to quickly react to make critical decisions in threatening or emergency situations and to be able to multi-task under pressure; and
  • The proficiency to use FM radio communication effectively using 10-code and the phonetic alphabet.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A graduate of a police/peace officer program or a Security Services course recognized by the Government of Alberta that complies with being licensed to be a security services worker in the Province of Alberta.
  • Two years' experience as a licensed security services worker or peace officer/police officer (equivalent customer service experience with completion of a police studies/investigation studies diploma will be considered).
  • Current Standard First Aid certificate.
  • Prior experience in a post-secondary institution is an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • This position can only be held by a person licensed under the Security Services and Investigators Act by the Province of Alberta. Any cancellation/removal or expiry of that license would be cause for termination.
  • The successful incumbent will be required to obtain a Police Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • This position requires shift work covering 24 hours/365 days a year.
