The Government of Manitoba has an exciting opportunity for experienced sewing industry professionals to join our team. This competition may be used to fill similar positions at the various Correctional Centres such as Brandon Correctional Centre (BCC), Headingley Correctional Centre (HCC), The Manitoba Youth Centre (MYC), The Pas Correctional Centre (TPCC), Winnipeg Remand Centre (WRC), Milner Ridge Correctional Centre (MRCC), and Women’s Correctional Centre (WCC). Successful candidates will be required to utilize their practical hands-on sewing skills to instruct inmates in all aspects of a sewing service training program.
Conditions of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must provide and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
- Must provide and maintain satisfactory Child Abuse and Adult Abuse Registry Checks
- Must be able to provide a satisfactory Enhanced Security Screening Level 4
- Must be willing and able to work in various settings, including indoor and outdoor environments.
- Must provide and maintain a full class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Extensive experience using and maintaining sewing equipment, including flat seamers, sergers, cutters, and small hand tools, while maintaining safety and security within the youth centre
- Experience supervising, teaching, and providing instruction to youth on the use of sewing equipment while maintaining safety and security for all youth, Juvenile Counselors, and other staff
- Must be experienced in project management, scheduling, material, and resource acquisition
- Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills are required
- Initiative and innovation, and the ability to be detail-oriented in a deadline-oriented environment
- Ability to stimulate and maintain constructive relationships with youth, which promotes confidence and co-operation between Juvenile Counselors and youth

- Knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions, and spirituality
Duties:
Reporting to the Assistant Superintendent Programs, the sewing instructor teaches and provides general instruction to youth regarding workshop orientation, procedures, practices and policies, tool and safety standards, operation and maintenance of workshop equipment, and quality control of products while maintaining safety and security within the youth centre. The incumbent provides general management of the sewing workshop including material management, tool count and inventory control. Maintenance of sound institution security and youth management practices.
