Job Details

Position: Experimental Plasma Physicist

Location: Richmond, BC, Canada

General Fusion is transforming how the world is energized by developing the first commercially-viable fusion power plant. Fusion will deliver clean, safe, and on-demand power at industrial scale, providing a powerful complement to renewables and a pathway to a zero-emissions grid.

Combining new technologies, proven industrial processes, and advances in fundamental fusion science, General Fusion aims to be the first in the world to develop commercial fusion power. Key performance requirements have been demonstrated at the system level, setting the stage for building a pre-commercial fusion power prototype.

Position Overview

We invite applications from experienced plasma physicists, with experimental or theoretical specializations eager to contribute to General Fusion’s progress on Magnetized Target Fusion. Our reactor concept uses moving lithium walls to mechanically compress a toroidal plasma target formed by coaxial helicity injection. The stability, energy and impurity transport, and plasma material interactions are all active areas of study. A successful applicant should be able to conceive and deliver research projects which build rigorous justification for General Fusion’s technology and rapidly respond to practical engineering challenges. In doing this, the physicist should be able to build collaboration with external researchers at universities and national laboratories thereby strengthening the scientific justification for General Fusion’s approach.

Education

Relevant Skills and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Physics or adjacent field

Required

  • 6 years (may include Doctoral/Ph.D.) research experience in fusion plasma physics. Fluency in fundamental plasma physics theory, familiarity with toroidal plasmas. Experience with design, fabrication, and operation of plasma diagnostics. Experience with data processing and handling for plasma diagnostics. Knowledge of relevant data analysis techniques. Demonstrated ability with general scientific computing (including Python). Demonstrated scientific writing ability and strong scholarly practices. Record of peer-reviewed computational plasma physics publications. Experience in international collaborative scientific research and peer-reviewed publication record. Experience of successful grant, experimental facility, or compute allocation proposal preparation and the scientific peer review process. Enthusiasm to relocate to the Vancouver area.
