We are currently seeking a full-time Crew Chief to join our Utility Services group in Red Deer, Alberta. Summary of Responsibilities:

Working under the supervision of a Project Manager and/or Land Surveyor, and reporting to the Field Operations Manager, duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading a crew in surveying tasks within the Utility Services group at Midwest, including:
  • Distribution and Transmission Powerline design, layout, and construction surveying,
  • Completion of survey calculations.
  • Serving in a client-facing role, having regular interaction with Midwest clients, landowners and/or members of the public.
  • Collaborating with Project Managers, Land Surveyors, and other Crew Chiefs to ensure quality client service.
  • Adapting to varying work assignment lengths based on client requirements, job complexity and/or job location.
  • Working overtime as needed.

What you offer:

  • A valid driver’s license, free of major convictions as defined in jurisdictional traffic safety regulations (i.e., distracted driving, driving while impaired).
  • A diploma or degree in Geomatics from a recognized post-secondary institution, or equivalent experience. Equivalent experience is 5+ years in the survey industry in a related position.
  • The ability to comply with Drug & Alcohol testing requirements as stipulated by client requirements and jurisdictional health and safety regulations.
  • Experience working in outdoor, all-weather environments.
  • Experience and proficiency with basic Microsoft applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Experience and proficiency with the operation of all types of survey equipment (RTK GNSS, Total Stations, Levels, Laser Scanners).
  • Familiarity with all elements of the practice of surveying in the jurisdiction of application.
  • Willingness and understanding to learn and adopt Midwestpolicies, procedures, and checklists/project documentation.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in powerline and utility surveying, including but not limited to underground and overhead distribution surveys, transmission line surveys, cadastral/legal surveys, and as-built surveys.
  • As an asset, demonstrated proficiency with line locating.
  • As an asset, but not required, a NavCanada RPAS Basic or Advanced UAV/Drone license.
  • Availability to work Monday through Friday with some weekend and out of town work, as job scope requires.

  • Demonstration of organization skills and attention to detail.

Work Environment, Physical Effort & Schedule:

The Crew Chief position works in various outdoor and all-terrain, all-weather environments typically present in Western Canada, and physical exertion may be required daily including, but not limited to:

  • Walking on a variety of uneven ground, up to several kilometers (i.e., fields, pasture, construction sites, rugged natural terrain, etc).
  • Lifting equipment and supplies between 20-35 kg (50-80 lbs.) and carrying equipment and supplies up to 20 kg (50 lbs).
  • Operating OHVs (Off-Highway Vehicles) in all weather conditions.
  • Utilizing hand tools, such as hammers, sledgehammers and jackhammers to install survey monumentation and markings.

Field based survey positions, including the Crew Chief position, require availability to travel as required by work assignment. Midwest will be responsible for costs associated with lodging, and the Crew Chief shall be reimbursed for subsistence costs. The length of work assignments varies based on client requirements, job complexity, and job location.
