Property Use Coordinator at City of Burnaby

Salary: $6,200 – 6,460 – 6,730 – 7,011 – 7,319/month (2024 Rates)
Schedule: 70 hours bi-weekly; Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM – 4:45 PM (Nine-Day Fortnight)

This position works in the Bylaw Services organizational unit. This is community relations, regulatory, field and administrative work, involving achieving public compliance with property use, noise, zoning, building and licensing bylaws and mediating other related civil issues. An incumbent of this class investigates and resolves property misuse and licensing complaints and mediates in neighborhood disputes; interprets and provides advice in property use, licensing, noise, sound abatement and other bylaw requirements; inspects businesses for proper licensing; analyzes and recommends property tax exemptions; inspects buildings, dwelling units and construction sites to identify violations of city bylaws and takes remedial action or initiates legal action; prepares a variety of correspondence including reports for presentation to Council, reviews Council reports and recommends action on items relevant to the activities of the department. A high degree of tact and diplomacy and considerable independence of judgement and action is exercised in the work, particularly in the areas of dispute mediation, misuse of property investigations. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include the completion of post secondary education, preferably university graduation, including courses in oral and written communications, public relations and technical courses related to building regulations, plus considerable related experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of related bylaws, Acts and regulations, and the ability to interpret and explain applicable bylaws and regulations; to read site plans and drawings; investigates and inspects the circumstances regarding alleged illegal occupancies in a variety of dwelling structures; to recognize infractions of a variety of bylaws; to prepare a variety of correspondence and reports; to research related information; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal departments, external agencies, business operators, property owners, and the public; to gather evidence and prepare information for prosecution and to act as a witness in court; and to provide information, advice and assistance concerning related bylaws and regulations. A valid Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia is required.
