JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Manager of Quality, Innovation and Learning and in collaboration with leadership, committees, and departments, the Learning and Development Specialist for long-term care supports the ongoing learning and development of St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre staff by assessing needs, creating, delivering and providing opportunities that align with the Fixing Long Term Care Act 2021 and organizational goals. The Learning and Development Specialist promotes professional behaviour and cultivates a positive culture of learning by supporting ongoing staff development and empowering others through knowledge.
This position will facilitate and lead the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of learning opportunities designed to enhance proficiency, influence continuous quality improvement (CQI), promote leadership and teamwork skills. The Learning and Development Specialist designs, develops, and facilitates continuous learning through education, coaching and mentoring grounded in adult education principles that promote innovative learning environments both in-person and virtually. In addition, the specialist will coordinate research review and support student placements in collaboration with academic partners and medical/clinical leaders.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & SUCCESS CRITERIA
- Collaborates with department and program leads to assess training needs, identify gaps, and implement targeted education, audits, and remediation to ensure compliance with legislation, directives, policies, and procedures.
- Facilitates and supports staff in developing education programs to meet learning needs and sustain competencies.
- Fosters respectful and supportive relationships with departments, teams, and individuals across Long-Term Care, accommodating diverse backgrounds, experiences, and expertise.
- Oversees the onboarding, orientation, and management of both new hires and student placements in compliance with Ministry of Long-Term Care regulations and home-specific policies.
- Partners with subject matter experts to ensure learning and development initiatives align with organizational goals and job-specific competencies.
- Collaborates internally and externally to maintain awareness of evolving priorities and to enhance program relevance and effectiveness.
- Facilitates staff training and development (e.g., train-the-trainer initiatives) and provides feedback and coaching to new employees as needed.
- Develops, maintains, and updates educational materials and resources to reflect evidence-based practices, policies, and procedures.
- Coordinates the Learning Management System (LMS), including maintenance of employee education records, generation of reports, creation of interactive modules, vendor liaison, and user support, in collaboration with the Digital Health and Information Technology Department.
- Promotes continuous quality improvement through engagement of staff in quality and education-related initiatives.
- Ensures compliance with staff training requirements outlined in the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, by:
- Collaborating with Program Leads to maintain current training modules that meet legislative standards.
- Ensuring comprehensive general and clinical orientation programs are in place.
- Demonstrates a commitment to personal and professional growth by remaining current with emerging trends, legislation, and best practices.
- Serves as a champion of the SJLCB mission, vision, and values—promoting a culture of learning, safety, engagement, and inclusion throughout the organization.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- Post-secondary education in a related field; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Regulated health professional designation an asset.
- Minimum two (2) years of teaching experience in a healthcare environment, including program design, coordination, delivery, and evaluation.
- Demonstrated expertise in adult education, instructional design, and organizational development.
- Proven ability to develop, deliver, and evaluate evidence-based training programs aligned with organizational needs across the multidisciplinary team
- Strong understanding of adult learning principles and instructional design frameworks.
- Knowledge of change management, LEAN, quality improvement, and project management principles (preferred).
- Skilled facilitator with experience leading group learning and fostering effective communication.
- Proficient in Microsoft 365, with advanced skills in Excel.
- Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and organizational abilities; able to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Collaborative team player with the ability to build relationships and influence at all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated discretion, tact, and professionalism when handling confidential or sensitive information.
