The Opportunity
SKYTRAC is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to take a leading role in the design, development, certification, and lifecycle support of advanced avionics systems for current and next-generation aircraft platforms. This is a key technical position requiring deep expertise in aerospace electrical systems, embedded hardware design, and system integration to deliver certified, robust, and high-performance avionics products. The incumbent will work closely with engineering, test, and systems teams to support rapid development and integration cycles, ensuring seamless system performance from concept through release.
This is an in-office position, ideally based in Ottawa, ON, though we are open to supporting the role from our Kelowna, BC office. Relocation support is available for the successful candidate.

As a Senior Electrical Engineer, Responsibilities Include
Design & Development
- Lead the end-to-end design of avionics hardware, including schematic capture, PCB layout, design reviews, board bring-up, debug and testing.
- Architect analog and digital circuit designs for embedded processors, sensors, RF interfaces, and communication subsystems (ARINC 429, CAN, RS-232/422, Ethernet, etc.).
- Develop test strategies and collaborate on the integration of hardware with software/firmware teams for embedded systems.
- Apply deep understanding of signal integrity, power integrity, and EMI/EMC design principles.
- Experienced with signal integrity, power integrity and EMI/EMC considerations.
- Provide technical direction, mentorship, and peer review for junior engineers and designers.
- Drive design decisions and best practices across the avionics product lifecycle from concept and prototyping through environmental testing and production release.
- Contribute to certification activities, including preparation of engineering documentation, design assurance levels (DALs), and compliance with DO-254 and RTCA/DO-160 standards.
- Lead root cause investigations for complex field issues, product failures, or system degradations through root cause analysis.
- Maintain and enhance legacy avionics hardware to ensure ongoing compliance and functionality with evolving standards customer needs.
- Implement obsolescence management strategies and coordinate redesigns or component substitutions when necessary.
- Manage component obsolescence and execute redesigns or substitutions in coordination with supply chain and production teams.
- Work cross-functionally with software, systems, manufacturing, and certification teams to ensure design integrity and successful integration.
- Engage directly with customers and suppliers to define and validate requirements.
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives in design methodology, documentation standards, and engineering toolsets.
Candidate Must Have’s
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering.
- 8+ years of progressive experience in electrical hardware design, with at least 3 years in avionics or aerospace environments.
- Proficiency with EDA tools (e.g., Altium Designer, DxDesigner, OrCAD).
- Skilled in circuit simulation, prototyping, PCB assembly, and rework.
- Experienced with lab instrumentation including oscilloscopes, spectrum/network analyzers, and signal generators.
- Knowledge of IPC standards (IPC-A-610, J-STD-001, IPC-7711/7721).
- Strong documentation, analytical, and reporting skills.
- Experience with RF system design or embedded system integration in aviation contexts.
- Experience with electronics manufacturing.
- Hands-on experience with design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for test (DFT).
- Understanding of software development or firmware validation practices (DO-178C exposure)
- Programming and scripting skills in C, Java, Python, etc.
