We are hiring a full time, permanent Civil Engineer, Downtown & Distribution Automation position working out of Edmonton, AB.


In this role, you will be responsible for the design, interpretation, and authentication of engineering drawings, standards, and specifications. You will ensure all work meets health and safety, environmental, operational, reliability, and customer requirements, while actively engaging with customers to set expectations and address impacts related to EPCOR’s projects.


What you’d be responsible for


  • Authenticate and approve complex civil, structural, and geotechnical designs, including implementing innovative modifications and continuous improvements to standards and specifications
  • Develop unique engineering solutions for complex projects and lead Management of Change initiatives to support innovation and adaptability
  • Conduct material reviews and field inspections during construction and maintenance to ensure quality, compliance, and constructability
  • Mentor and coach engineering staff, identify development needs, and supervise design teams to ensure high performance and growth
  • Provide technical expertise in utility design and analysis, ensuring teams have the skills and support needed to deliver effective engineering solutions
  • Design and deliver training programs in civil, structural, and geotechnical engineering, with a focus on constructability and system compatibility
  • Establish and promote best practices in engineering design, materials, and methods to position the team as an industry leader in safety and efficiency
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration to build a Body of Practice and share lessons learned across departments and business units
  • Develop and manage engineering processes to ensure compliance with codes, standards, and risk mitigation, including asset record-keeping
  • Stay current with CSA, Alberta Electrical Utility Code, and Building Codes. Ensure compliance and provide training on standards and approvals
  • Build and maintain strong collaborative relationships across internal departments and with external stakeholders across multiple business units
  • Establish, monitor and report on engineering performance metrics. Identify areas for improvement and implement initiatives to enhance design quality and efficiency



What’s required to be successful


  • Diploma or degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institute
  • With a Degree in Engineering we require:
    • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
  • With a Diploma in Civil or Electrical Engineering we require:
    • Professional Licensee (P.L. Eng.) with the ability to review, approve and stamp Civil, Structural, and Geotechnical utility distribution system construction designs
  • Currently registered or eligible to be registered with APEGA
  • 5+ years of professional civil/structural/geotechnical experience in utility systems, including design, standards, construction, and field support
  • Strong knowledge of civil, structural, and geotechnical utility system design and construction, including excavation, shoring, soil analysis, and material selection
  • Expertise in utility system assets such as duct banks, manholes, vaults, power poles, aerial structures, and subsurface coordination
  • Familiarity with Alberta Electric Utility Code, CSA Standards, and Alberta OH&S Part 32, with awareness of OSHA Part 1926
  • Proficient in engineering standards, material specifications, and design guidelines for utility systems
  • Advanced geotechnical knowledge related to open cut excavation and shoring design
  • Skilled in design software including MicroStation, ArcGIS, Civil 3D, AutoCAD, SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, and Autodesk Robot
  • Experience designing and managing complex utility construction projects with increasing responsibility
  • Strong project management skills with proven ability to lead new initiatives and implement process improvements in engineering practices
  • Effective collaborator with strong relationship-building skills across teams and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, solve complex technical problems, and make sound decisions
