Edmonton Catholic Schools is looking for an Instructor (9) - Construction to join Cardinal Leger Catholic Junior High School!
The Instructor (9) - Construction supports the teacher in the delivery of Career Technology Studies with a focus on Carpentry in partnership with a certified teaching staff member. The job has responsibility for delivery of the curriculum, as well as apprenticeship training and preparation, as prescribed in the Alberta Guide to Education. The incumbent supervises and assists students, ensures security for tools, equipment and the workshop; works with the teacher to ensure that procedures related to safety and cleanliness are followed by students at all times.
The job requires the incumbent to be skilled and experienced, with an in-depth knowledge in all aspects of the carpentry trade.
JOB RESPONSIBILITES
Planning activities
- Develop and implement instructional plans and activities in the shop
- Create and plan effective curriculum-based projects
- Plan and create activities in consultation with the teacher
Consult with the teacher in planning all hands-on shop activities
Carpentry instruction
- Instruct and demonstrate proper safety practices, procedures, and standards relevant to carpentry work environments
- Instruct students on tasks involving the use of woodworking equipment such as table saws, jointers, planers, and routers
- Teach students the safe operation and maintenance of carpentry machinery including miter saws, drill presses, and pneumatic nailers
- Coordinate with the teacher and deliver components of the Carpenter apprenticeship curriculum, including framing, finishing, and blueprint reading
- Monitor and document student progress, providing constructive feedback and formal evaluations
- Demonstrate carpentry techniques to students in both group settings and one-on-one instruction, supporting them through lessons, assignments, projects, and hands-on activities
Teach and model proper use of hand and power tools such as chisels, hammers, levels, circular saws, and cordless drills
Classroom supports
- Build positive relationships with students by providing meaningful and current instruction and by individualizing programs
- Provide students with clear expectations, continual feedback, and logical consequences.
- Provide students with opportunities to expand their skill and knowledge bases
- Participate in field trips to post- secondary institutes, worksites, businesses and hands-on workshops
- Perform routine maintenance of equipment and tools used in the program
- Manage inventory control including purchasing materials, supplies, equipment and tools
Manage recycling of waste materials, liquids and containers
General supports
- Provide input into short- and long-term strategic planning activities
- Participate in special events and school celebrations
- Participate in department and unit meetings
- Provide cover-off during absences and assist coworkers with peak workloads
Maintain technical knowledge through a range of professional development activities
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and Experience
- Alberta-certified journeyperson in Carpentry is mandatory, plus five years of related instructional and industry experience
- Knowledge of construction fundamentals such as tool identification and safe usage, material properties, and measurement and layout techniques.
- Proficiency in interpreting construction drawings and blueprints and understanding of relevant safety standards, building codes, and regulations.
- Knowledge of framing methods, finishing processes, and other essential carpentry practices.
- Knowledge of instructional techniques and inventory control principles and practices
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations and legislation, regulations governing Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TGD)
- Knowledge of records management principles, the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA), and the Access to Information Act (ATIA)
Understanding of the high school curriculum and general knowledge of the Division’s and school’s programs and operations
Competencies
- Strong presentation skills with the ability to develop and deliver instructional material
- Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills are required
- Ability to build and maintain rapport and trust with students
- Strong leadership, mentoring and coaching skills
- Ability to work in partnership with the teacher to plan and implement instructional activities
- Strong organizational skills are required to coordinate the many aspects of the work
- Strong planning, problem solving and analytical skills
- Strong time management skills and the ability to manage conflicting priorities
