Located between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, Niagara encompasses an area of 1,852 km2 and is home to communities rich in both character and history.


Reporting to the Medical Officer of Health / Commissioner of Public Health, the Associate Medical Officers of Health provide leadership, strategic direction and medical consultation with respect to health promotion and disease prevention programs and services to the public in Regional Niagara. Niagara Region seeks two highly skilled and motivated professionals to provide support and medical expertise in the development and implementation of Public Health activities, programs, and initiatives. These roles involve managing multiple health portfolios while maintaining awareness of international and provincial developments in public health to advise on appropriate local responses. The successful candidates will provide intensive medical advice on managing public health issues specific to their assigned portfolios and conduct research on community health problems, preparing written papers for publication and presentation at public health or specialty conferences. Additionally, these roles include participating in a 24-hour on-call system with the Medical Officer of Health for the Public Health Department and managing people resource planning for the operating unit.


The successful candidates hold a Medical Degree and either a Fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Community Medicine or a Master’s Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, or Community Medicine from a recognized university. They should bring a minimum of 5 years of experience in a Public Health environment, with a preference for those with experience in leadership and management of Public Health Services within a municipal or government setting. A current license to independently practice medicine from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario is required. Additionally, the candidates should have a strong understanding of the Health Protection and Promotion Act, OPHS, and OPHOS to effectively contribute to public health initiatives and services. These positions offer flexibility in its structure, allowing for full-time, part-time, or alternative working arrangements to accommodate the successful candidate’s expertise and professional commitments while ensuring the effective delivery of public health initiatives.
