Responsibilities

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Under the guidance of the Operations Managers, provides day-to-day oversight to the activities and services related to the operational delivery of effective, safe, reliable and efficient ferry services to customers in the Lower Mainland on the SeaBus and passenger terminals.

Key Accountabilities

Oversee daily SeaBus operations, ensuring vessels and terminals are prepared for service and effectively responding to service disruptions to minimize impact on operations and customer experience.

Act as an Information Lead to ensure confidential records are managed appropriately throughout their lifecycle, in line with enterprise policies, legal requirements, and business needs.

Directly manage the Office Operations Assistants; assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and ensuring the team operates efficiently and in alignment with operational goals and organizational policies.

Provide frontline supervision to unionized staff, including assigning and reviewing work, monitoring performance, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures, addressing attendance and conduct issues, and participating in disciplinary processes as required.

Provide leadership and guidance to SeaBus crew members regarding safety and operational procedures, ensuring consistent adherence to established performance standards. Monitor and promote adherence to safety, security, and environmental standards

Conduct operational briefings and debriefings to communicate service updates, safety alerts, operational updates and procedural changes.

Plan and schedule work to ensure all shifts are adequately staffed in alignment with Transport Canada’s Minimum Safe Manning regulations for all vessels, approve and sign timesheets and process payroll accordingly.

Foster effective working relationships with unionized staff, project teams, contractors, and internal/external stakeholders to ensure smooth operational coordination.

Support the implementation of digital hardware on vessels and at terminals, including assisting staff with related procedures and troubleshooting as needed.

Process and review operational documentation. Examine ship logs, daily record sheets, and other reports to identify and address operational issues. Ensure compliance with the Vancouver Harbour Master and Canadian Coast Guard requirements.

Develop and coordinate training programs and schedules. Ensure completion of all mandatory safety drills (e.g., fire, life raft) in accordance with regulatory standards.

Maintain a thorough understanding of corporate policies, procedures, and service standards. Ensure consistent application to support reliable and effective public transportation services.

Respond to customer feedback, including complaints and commendations. Collaborate with internal departments such as Engineering, TL Projects, and Customer Service to resolve issues efficiently.

Support the department manager with ongoing projects and operational initiatives. Serve in an acting capacity (Assistant Manager) as required to cover for absences or vacancies.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The competencies for this position would be acquired through completion of a Marine certificate of competency or Degree in related field, Courses in Supervisory Skills, Information Technology, Labour Relations and Business Administration would be an asset

Plus, Three(3) years previous experience in progressively responsible positions in marine operations or other fields, involving the supervision of unionized employees and the application of collective agreements, work rules, policies and procedures.

Other Requirements

Strong working knowledge of marine operations and terminal facility management.

Prior experience working in a marine environment, preferably in an operational or supervisory capacity.

Proven leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage teams and respond effectively to operational challenges.

Familiarity with Transport Canada regulations and marine safety requirements, including Minimum Safe Manning standards and Safety Management Systems (SMS).

Solid understanding of the marine regulatory environment with solid knowledge of the concepts, principles, practices and techniques of operations as it pertains to a marine environment.

Solid knowledge of relevant standards, legislation, acts and regulatory requirements particularly of the Canada Shipping Act and good understanding of the requirements and practices of classifications societies.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Solid computer skills in MS Office suite and use of web-based systems.

Advanced analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills to identify and mitigate risks pertaining to areas of accountability.

Previous experience in responding to and managing emergency situations in an operations environment.

Recruitment Process: An applicant will be required to demonstrate their suitability for this position by meeting the minimum level of qualifications and experience in order to be invited into the selection process. Rate of Pay

The salary for this position ranges from $82,400 - $123,600 per annum. Actual salary offered will be based on education, experience, skills, and qualifications as they relate to the role.
