Environmental Specialist, Field Lead (Contaminated Sites) at Millennium EMS Solutions Ltd.

Working as an Environmental Scientist – Field Lead in the Brownfield & Assessment Service Group providing environmental site assessment (ESA)/site investigation, remediation and re-development services for clients throughout Canada. This position focuses on the excellent execution of a variety of workscopes and accurate project progress tracking and reporting. The successful candidate will also be a key contributor to the mentorship and development of junior field support staff.

The incumbent will apply their technical skillset to successfully plan and execute field and/or office-based tasks under the guidance of an assigned project manager and/or senior staff. This incumbent can execute work scopes or projects in adherence to client-specific requirements, as well as health, safety, environmental and wellness policies as outlined by MEMS. This position is full time and requires a combination of field and office work.

Key Responsibilities

Scope of Work Execution and Project Tracking

  • Leading the scoping, execution planning, organization and oversight of field- and/or office- based programs for Phase 1 and 2 ESA’s/Stage 1 and 2 site investigations and remediation projects, including but not limited to assessment of soil, groundwater, surface water, and/or soil vapour with a focus on sites requiring risk-based solutions.
  • Working with contractors to complete assessment and remediation projects.
  • Accurate and timely cost tracking of field expenses and contractors.
  • Executing all aspects of the project in accordance with the work scope and ensuring quality of processes and deliverables.

Technical Engagement

  • Collection and organization of field data, file compilation, interpretation of laboratory data results and report writing.
  • Synthesize published and site-specific information to present a concise interpretation of the site conditions and develop a conceptual site model to assist in understanding and communicating key site issues;
  • Conducting site specific risk assessments and developing risk-based remedial objectives for contaminated sites of low to intermediate complexity with senior supervision;
  • Contributing role in completion of risk assessment projects for complex sites; and
  • Working with senior risk assessment staff to develop appropriate risk-based site management strategies.

Mentorship

  • Mentoring and career development of junior personnel in both field and office-related tasks;
  • Documentation and reporting of competency development of junior staff with respect to field technical skillsets; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

What You Bring

  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in environmental site assessment and remediation, preferably in a consulting environment with documented experience as a field lead on assessment and/or remediation sites.
  • Knowledge and experience with relevant provincial legislation and familiarity with the environmental site assessment process is a requirement.
  • Documented experience as a field lead on projects involving ground disturbance.
  • Eligibility for membership in a relevant professional organization is required.
  • Must be able to meet the requirements of site access as dictated by our clients, this may include pre-access drug, alcohol and fitness testing, and
  • Possess a valid, non-GDL Class 5 Drivers license.

Other Knowledge And Skills

  • Knowledge and experience with current provincial and federal legislation and familiarity with the environmental site assessment process.
  • Understanding of environmental industry’s best practices.
  • Understanding of the upstream and downstream oil & gas industry, oil sands industry and commercial/industrial/brownfields environmental industry.
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of MS Office Suite. Proficiency in presenting complex results clearly.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary setting.
  • Ability to work either independently or as a part of a team interacting with other team members and contractors.
  • Able to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated with a strong work ethic; and
  • Excellent safety attitude.

Working Conditions

  • This individual should expect to spend approximately 60 to 70% of their work time at client sites; each individual trip lasting anywhere from 1 to 10 days. This individual may conduct assessments at industrial or commercial facilities, brownfield sites and/or greenfield sites in varying locations (remote to urban). In some cases, the field work may include carrying sampling equipment;
  • Office environment that requires sitting for extended periods of time, as well as field work;
  • Prolonged exposure to computer keyboards and computer screens;
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals;
  • Sometimes requires long hours of work. Occasional interruptions outside work hours and travel to other locations are required;
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including the occasional evening and night; and
  • Required to walk, stand, climb, bend forward, kneel down, crawl, reach and grasp, push and pull objects, lift and/or move up to 30 kg, sometimes over the shoulders, repetitive bending and lifting of items, along with repetitive arm movements.
