Primary Duties
Interview, hire and oversee training of staff.
Develops annual departmental manpower and expense budgets. Works in cooperation with the Plant Manager, Superintendents, and other Functional managers to develop the plant’s annual capital budget. Determines new equipment and training needs of the engineering function in support of new project requirements and job descriptions. Plan, administer and control budgets for contracts, equipment and supplies.
Directly supervises the plant’s Project, Controls, Tooling and Maintenance Engineering functions. Serves as a point of reference for the Process Engineering function as it relates to tooling design, engineering change requests, and training requirements.
May participate in the design, development and inspection of technical project or in the engineering work of the department.
Works in cooperation with Sales, R&D Engineering, and Operations in evaluating, developing, and implementing new technology which is a result of new product and process development and the plant’s continuous improvement initiatives to improve the plant’s quality and financial performance.
Works as part of a cross-functional team to review internal and external quality performance, implement corrective action as required, and support continuous improvement initiatives to improve product quality and reduce scrap.
Plan and facilitate major civil projects such as buildings, waste management and structural steel fabrications.
Ensures proper planning is in place to meet the Operation’s expectations for new job start up and the customer demands for seamless job launches for new programs and engineering changes. Manages processes, procedures, and methods used to ensure consistent development of specifications and tooling.
Leads the engineering portion of the APQP activities between Divisional Personnel and the plant’s Production and Quality Assurance functions to address potential quality, manufacturability, and profitability issues as they pertain to our materials, tooling, and processes.
Leads new job start up meetings to communicate open issues related to PPAP and new job start up and follows up to ensure timely completion of work necessary to close out the issues.
Ensure construction plans meet guidelines and specifications of building codes and other regulations.
Supervise technicians, technologists and other engineers and review and approve designs, calculations and cost estimates.
Directs and oversees all plant engineering presentations to the customers/plant visitors.
Engineering Manager shall ensure loss control concepts are considered in the design, development, operation and maintenance of facility equipment, processes and workstations.
Responsible for performing and managing above duties in compliance with IATF 16949 and ISO-14001 requirements.
SECONDARY DUTIES
Recruit personnel and oversee development and maintenance of staff competence in required area.
Analyze information system requirements and performance, and develop and implement new and modified systems.
Approve requisition orders to replenish parts, supplies and materials.
Approve requisition orders to replenish materials, equipment and stock.
Ensure research is being carried out into the feasibility, design, operation and performance of mechanisms, components and systems, to improve plant profitability.
Participation in the design of power plants, machines, components, tools, fixtures and equipment.
Help develop maintenance standards, schedules and programs and provide guidance to industrial maintenance.
Help conduct research into the feasibility, design, operation and performance of electrical generation and distribution networks, electrical machinery and components and electronic communications, instrumentation and control systems, equipment, and components.
Ensure proper investigation is done on any electrical or electronic failures.
Study new machinery and facilities and recommend or select efficient combinations.
Develop flexible or integrated manufacturing systems and procedures.
Determine human resource and skill requirements and develop training programs.
Establish programs and conduct studies to enhance industrial health and safety or to identify and correct fire and other hazards.
Develop and prepare design sketches.
Write technical reports.
Establish methods to meet work schedules and co-ordinate work activities with other departments.
Facilitate training of staff in job duties, safety procedures and company policies.
Oversee setting up of machines and equipment.
All employees are expected to comply with Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations as well as Cooper Standard Health, Safety and Environment procedures.
Employment Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field is the minimum requirement.
P. Eng designation would be an asset.
Extensive experience in an engineering discipline together with supervisor/manager/leadership experience in Engineering Department (min. 3 yrs).
Ability to complete projects on time and within established budgets.
Excellent project management skills, strong communication and writing skills, good interpersonal skills, excellent decision-making skills, skilled with engineering concepts, good analytical skills, and exceptional problem-solving skills.
Excellent team player, working effectively with diverse multidisciplinary teams.
