Addiction Specialist – Assertive Community Treatment – Temporary Full Time at Sault Area Hospital

Purpose

Works as a member of the multidisciplinary team to assess, plan, develop, coordinate and provide treatment, rehabilitation, crisis intervention and support services to program clients with severe and persistent mental illness, with complexities including concurrent disorders and physical health complications under the clinical supervision of the Program coordinator and psychiatrist.

Duties

  • Provide and coordinate treatment for an assigned group of clients.
  • Provide counseling and therapy to assist clients in developing skills to deal with and resolve their social and personal problems.
  • Plan programs of assistance for clients including referral to agencies that provide financial assistance, legal aid, housing, medical treatment and other services.
  • Serve as a member on interdisciplinary teams of professionals working with client groups.
  • Act as an advocate for client groups in the community, lobbying for solutions to problems directly affecting client groups and developing prevention and intervention programs to meet community needs.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of counseling and social programs.
  • Provide public education and consultation to professionals or groups regarding counseling services, issues and methods.
  • Function as a professional role model demonstrating good interpersonal skills and a commitment to self-growth and development.
  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices and benchmarks for the delivery of services, appropriate research, literature, accreditation requirements, policy and legislative requirements and implementing improvements/changes as appropriate.
  • Participate in ongoing quality improvement and risk management activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Health or Human Services related field
  • Current registration with regulating body in good standing
  • Certified in suicide intervention

Experience

  • One (1) year experience working in concurrent disorders
  • Community experience working with addiction and mental health
  • Experience in the assessment and treatment

  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast-paced environment in stressful situations.
  • Customer service, interpersonal and telephone skills.
  • Computer literacy in a Microsoft environment.
  • Ability to maintain successful working relationships with the interdisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes.
  • Ability to organize time effectively to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner.

  • Human relations skills including empathy, sensitivity, understanding of human and organizational behavior, motivational techniques and counseling skills (e.g. teaching patients).
  • Ability to read, write and communicate to perform the duties of the position.

  • Demonstrated ability to assess safety for patients and staff and act accordingly.
  • Demonstrated competence working in an independent and flexible manner in a community-based setting.
  • Ability to collaborate and contribute to a client-centered team developed treatment plan.
  • Experience facilitating self-care, productivity and leisure skill development within a multi-disciplinary team setting.
  • Knowledge of – local and regional programs/services that support people struggling with addictions, Standards of Performance.
  • Knowledge of evidence based treatment modalities specific to substance abuse, problem gambling, and concurrent disorders.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation – Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, Regulated Health Professionals Act, and Personal Health Information Protection Act.
