Your Opportunity:

This is a Recovery Alberta position, working in the field of Mental Health & Addictions. There are no Phys-Med duties associated with this role. Reporting to the Care Manager of the Community Outreach Assessment and Support Team (COAST), the Therapy Assistant (TA) is an integral member of an interdisciplinary team that facilitates the recovery process for clients experiencing mental illness and a co-occurring developmental disability. The TA works under the clinical direction of an Occupational Therapist, and in collaboration with other members of the COAST program, assisting in the planning and implementing of a wide variety of program options and opportunities that promote wellbeing for individuals and groups. This recovery-oriented role will assist clients to optimize their level of mental/emotional functioning to prepare them for success in the community. Essential to the skill set required is an understanding of how complex behaviors are manifested as a result of mental illness, developmental disability and various environmental factors. This position has transitioned to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. Description:

As a Therapy Assistant, you will work both individually and as part of an interprofessional team under the assignment, monitoring and evaluation of an audiologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, recreation therapist or speech-language pathologist. You will contribute to effective and efficient rehabilitation services including direct and indirect client care across the health care continuum (healthy living, getting better, living with illness and disability, end of life care) for all ages as well as non-client service provision. This role will require you to work effectively with internal and external partners, and display professionalism and strong ethics in both client centered care and participation in care teams. You will demonstrate evidence of reflective thinking and lifelong learning that enhances individual and team competency. You will have opportunities to use your interpersonal and clinical skills in contributing to quality improvement, program planning and student supervision.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of diploma from an accredited post-secondary rehabilitation Therapy Assistant program or equivalent training may be considered.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Experience working with Developmental Disabilities, Intellectual Disability, Complex behavioural presentations (including aggression), Complex Mental Health and Addictions. Familiarity with the PDD, FSCD and CFS Government of Alberta programs. Experience providing recovery-oriented mental health support to individuals residing in the Edmonton zone. Experience with a Trauma-Informed, Strengths Based and Culturally Aware approach when working with diverse communities and clientele. Experience promoting independence in daily living activities and motivating individuals to actively participate in programming/opportunities. Demonstrate well developed coaching skills using a supportive and effective communication style. Experience assessing successful interventions & risks and documenting interventions as per the scope of a Therapy Assistant. NVCI and BLS certified. Comfortable providing 1:1 client care in various community settings including recreational centers, client homes, schools, day-programs, city parks, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experienced mental health professional supporting adult and youth populations in outreach-based community settings. Skilled in interdisciplinary collaboration and engaging diverse clients, families, and providers. Flexible and creative in therapeutic approaches, including visual supports and social stories. Proficient in Connect Care and adept at coordinating services across Government of Alberta ministry branches.
