Community Operators – Nunatsiavut at SmartICE

In preparation for the 2026 Ice Season, SmartICE is looking to hire Community Operators to help with monitoring the sea-ice in Nunatsiavut. As a Community Operator, you will take part in training to learn how to use and maintain SmartICE’s SmartKAMUTIK and SmartBUOY sensors. You will also upload the data you collect to the SIKU platform to share with your community.

Training Dates: To be confirmed (dependent on ice conditions) – early 2026

Pay: $30/hr

SmartICE is looking for people who:

  • Want casual, seasonal work during the ice season.

  • Want to help with sea-ice safety in their community.

  • Have experience traveling on sea ice in your community.

  • Want to build new skills.

  • Applicants must have access to a snowmobile that they can use to operate the SmartKAMUTIK about once a week. SmartICE will pay operators for using their snowmobiles.

  • Understand the importance of job safety, responsibility, and respect at work.

  • Are interested in technology, environmental monitoring, or communications.

What you will do:

  • Take part in a 5-day SmartICE operator training (training dates to be confirmed)

  • Operate SmartKAMUTIK and SmartBUOY sensors at least once a week.

  • Work with the community to figure out safe routes for using the SmartKAMUTIK.

  • Upload the data you collect to the SIKU platform for the community.

  • Learn how to maintain equipment and stay safe on the ice.

  • Share your knowledge of local ice conditions.

  • Receive a certification in Emergency First Aid.

  • Potential to assist SmartICE in monitoring the Labrador Winter Trail as a Trail Marker in some regions (Jan – May 2026)
