Job Summary

The Safety Engineer, as part of UniFirst’s Corporate Support Services Safety Team, develops and implements health and safety programs across UniFirst’s locations, focusing on the Company’s Canadian operations, ensuring federal/provincial compliance and driving Safety Culture continuous improvement through training and on-site engagement.

Job Description

  • Design, manage, and continuously improve safety programs, procedures, and training to protect Team Partners, visitors, and contractors at UniFirst locations.
  • Strengthen the Safety Ambassador program and support operation led safety inspections across sites.
  • Help to identify hazards at our locations, drive corrections, and train managers and frontline teams.
  • Deliver training and roll out new safety initiatives, as required.
  • Perform Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Hazard Assessments (HAs), and risk/ergonomics assessments.
  • Partner with operational leaders to implement corrective actions - engineering controls, equipment and process changes, positive reinforcement, and administrative measures.
  • Model and coach safe work practices on site.
  • Assist with accident, incident, and near-miss reporting in the Risk Management System, as necessary.
  • Investigate incidents and manage injuries; assist locations with root-cause analyses and corrective actions.
  • Analyze injury data to identify trends; recommend improvements and update JHAs as needed.
  • Serve as liaison with local, provincial, and federal safety/environmental agencies and emergency management organizations.
  • Collaborate with operations to eliminate hazards company-wide.
  • Review and approve process and equipment plans; assess risks with site teams and verify control effectiveness.
  • Evaluate machinery modifications for safety improvements

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • 3–5 years in industrial/manufacturing environments; industrial laundry experience strongly preferred.
  • CSP (or equivalent) preferred; willingness to obtain required
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Experience with OSHA/CSA and applicable provincial/federal OHS compliance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Effective at partnering with labor, management, consultants, and government entities
  • Professional, collaborative, and solutions-oriented demeanor
  • Strong multitasking skills with the ability to meet deadlines
  • Openness to cross-training in additional Health & Safety domains
  • Ability to identify and correct unsafe acts and conditions
  • Skilled in Root Cause Analysis, mitigation, and corrective action planning
  • Knowledge and practical application of the hierarchy of control

Education

Bachelor’s degree from accredited four-year college required, Safety and Health or related degree preferred.

Additional Requirements

  • Travel 25% (additional travel may be required during onboarding, audits or serious incident investigations.)
  • Clean driving record
  • Ability to obtain passport for Canadian/US travel
  • Experience with Origami preferable
  • Knowledgeable in Third-Party Compliance preferable
  • Bilingual in French and English
