  • Must provide own tools and vehicle as per the applicable Collective Agreement.
  • May be required to work overtime.
  • Must have a current Class 5 Alberta Operators License, and provide current drivers abstract.

Position Description

purpose


Repairs and generally maintains the structural components (i.e., those systems of components of the structure which are not the responsibility of other trades) of the structure or infrastructure of facilities to the standards set by the Calgary Board of Education and the Alberta Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Board.

This position is accountable for:


  • Maintaining a productive balance between quality and quantity of work in an efficient and timely manner while demonstrating adaptability to changes in work priorities;

  • Demonstrating teamwork to contribute towards and maintain positive work relationships; and
  • Performing all duties in accordance with CBE and legislative safety practices and procedures at all times to ensure their own safety and the safety of team members, staff and students.


major responsibilities


  • Constructs, repairs, and generally maintains the wood, wood composite, gypsum, plastic laminate, metal and concrete components of the structure and infrastructure.

  • Operates hand, power, pneumatic and explosion activated tools and equipment in an effective and safe manner.

  • Maintains knowledge of all materials relating to the trade and seeks out information on new materials that may be appropriate for use in education/institutional buildings.

  • Reads and utilizes blueprints, specifications and standards effectively. Produces accurate readable sketches.

  • Utilizes drawings and/or specifications, site visit measurements, material quantity take-offs, known labour rates and other information available, to produce accurate estimates for work covered in this trade.

  • Utilizes construction and building sciences theory to resolve building failure problems (e.g., building envelope failure).

  • Utilizes knowledge of Alberta Building Code and other codes and statutes relevant to the duties of a journeyman carpenter to maintain CBE facilities to a safe standard that complies to these codes and statutes.

  • Makes recommendations to the Area Maintenance Supervisor for future Infrastructure Maintenance Program upgrades.

  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance functions on structural components and related equipment.

  • Prepares reports, schedules surveys or recommendations as requested.

  • Completes work orders as assigned.

  • Assists in the design and inspection of new schools and modernizations as required.

  • Assists the Area Maintenance Supervisor in determining stock levels and types of plumbing related materials to be procured.

  • Instructs and assists Facility Operators in building operation with respect to structural related matters and repairs.

  • Adequately stocks vehicle when a service vehicle is assigned. Maintains cleanliness and basic service checks.

  • Works collaboratively with all other trades in the repair/service of structural components and related equipment.

  • May assume duties of Foreman as required.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Must have minimum three years’ experience as a Journeyman Carpenter.
  • Shop experience is an asset.
  • Must possess a Class 5 driver’s license and provide a current abstract.
  • Knowledge of Provincial Occupational Health and Safety acts and regulations.
  • Knowledge of Alberta Building Code and other codes applicable to the carpenter’s trade.
  • Six months successful experience working in a Facility Operations Area.
  • Must have service (i.e., maintenance) experience in all aspects of the carpentry trade.


Demonstrated Skills and Competencies

  • Must have strong communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as the ability to keep accurate records.
  • Must be physically able to complete all demands and responsibilities of the position and work in inclement weather over a scheduled shift.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively at multi-storey heights from ladders, scaffolding and all types of hydraulic lift equipment.
  • Self-motivated; able to work independently, strong organizational and time management skills and demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Skilled at maintaining and enhancing levels of service delivery and customer focus are required.
  • Willingness to upgrade and remain current with practices and trends.
  • Personal suitability.
