The Painter position performs a wide range of work including preparing surfaces and painting materials and performing brush, roller and spray-painting for maintenance, repair, decoration and construction projects.
Work may involve procedures of a technical nature and requires the use of a variety of hand and power tools. The duties are of moderate complexity and are completed with minimal supervision. Assignments will vary considerably depending on the unit served.
Some jobs in this class may entail supervisory responsibility. Where supervision is required, the job must achieve smooth workflow by delegating assignments and explaining procedures.
Responsibilities require a qualified Journeyman Painter trades certificate and the ability to demonstrate considerable expertise, working knowledge and leadership in their unit.

The job also requires an understanding of other trades and the department activities.
Work is performed within the Division/department policies and procedures and is guided by painting and spray painting principles, standards, practices and those established by the department. Work is completed in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations and guidelines and the Division’s goals and objectives.
There is considerable discretion exercised by the incumbent in the performance of its regular duties.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Repair, maintenance and renovation

  • Prepare interior and exterior surfaces to be painted by cleaning, sanding, brushing, patching holes and cracks with appropriate fillers removing all rough spots and imperfections
  • Apply an undercoat primer or sealer before painting
  • Select premixed paints or prepare paints to match specified colours by mixing colour pigment, oil and thinning and drying substances
  • Uses brushes, rollers, and spray guns to apply the required paints, enamels, varnishes, lacquers, or other protective or decorative materials on a wide variety of surfaces such as wood, metal, plaster, brick, stucco, cement and wallboard
  • Prepare wood/metal surfaces by removing old coating by stripping with solvents, heat, sanding, wire brushing, or water and sand blasting
  • May remove graffiti and complete other emergency painting projects as required
  • Participate in the refinishing of gym floors, stages etc.
  • Estimate time, material, equipment and supplies needed
  • Select and ensure the proper use of tools and materials
  • Assist department staff with a variety of projects and provide cover-off during absences as required
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor


Worksite, material and equipment maintenance

  • Ensure proper ventilation in working area at all times
  • Ensure worksites are clean and maintained within safety standards (i.e. clean and store brushes, rollers and paints/varnishes and all flammable liquids)
  • Ensure tools and equipment are operating properly and report deficiencies to supervisor


Building site security

  • Ensure materials and tools are safely operated and stored at all times
  • Secure building as required depending on worksite requirements


JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and Experience:

  • High School, plus a current Alberta Journeyman Painter and Decorator Certificate plus several years of related experience is required
  • Thorough knowledge of painting and related materials, products, blending techniques, application and safety procedures
  • Requires a general understanding of the Alberta Building Code and strong knowledge of OHS Regulations and legislation, regulations governing WHMIS and TGD
  • Knowledge of department and unit policies, procedures, business and operations
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft programs – Word, Outlook and the Internet is required; knowledge of electronic attendance systems is an asset
  • Standard First Aid/CPR is an asset


Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to calculate and estimate proportions and quantities of paints
  • Ability to exercise tact, courtesy and good judgment when dealing with other trades, school principals, teachers, students, co-workers and the general public
  • Ability to work at heights is required as well as a good sense of colour
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Fluency in the English language including both oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to schedule, plan task priorities for self and others, while managing several projects with conflicting demands
  • Physically able to complete the duties using appropriate tools and techniques (lifting up to 30Kg/66lbs)
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license and the ability to travel to various sites within Edmonton
  • Ability to provide a clean driver’s abstract upon hire and as requested
  • Possession of a full kit of recognized basic hand tools
