Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services (MHS) that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth/811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.
We access all communities in Nova Scotia in a timely and efficient manner with our fleet of more than 180 ambulances and support vehicles operating out of 60+ stations. We respond to 165,000+ calls annually across the province, which are actively managed through the EHS Operations Medical Communications Centre, the hub of all emergency (911) and non-emergency (hospital transfers) medical calls.
The EHS Operations LifeFlight program provides even greater accessibility by responding to patients on scene or through inter-facility transports by our critical care team via helicopter, fixed wing, or ground ambulance.
In addition, paramedics in Nova Scotia participate in various programs both urban and rural such as community-based paramedic programs, collaborative emergency centres, and emergency preparedness and special operations, to name a few.

Reporting to the Provincial Manager of Occupational Health and Safety, the Injury Prevention Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing ergonomic and safe work strategies to reduce workplace injuries and support employee recovery. This role blends safety education, ergonomic assessments and workplace re-integration as part of EMC’s Connect & Recover program to promote a safe and healthy work environment and enhance employee performance and resilience.
A key member of the Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness team, this role collaborates with internal teams and external partners to ensure that health, safety, wellness and recovery are integrated into every aspect of the organization.

Injury Prevention
- Perform ergonomic evaluations and analyze job tasks to identify potential risks, recommending adjustments or interventions to enhance physical and psychological safety and minimize injury with patient and equipment handling.
- Analyze workplace incident data to pinpoint trends, high-risk areas and implement targeted strategies.
- Identify and create cognitive and physical job demands for all positions along with a list of duties for high-risk positions.
- Facilitate or coordinate training and awareness programs focused on injury prevention, safe work procedures, and early symptom reporting, fostering a culture where safety, health and wellness are integral to every role.
- Partner with internal teams and external partners to design, launch, and assess proactive injury prevention initiatives, ensuring they align with organizational safety goals and comply with regulatory standards.
- Facilitate and/or coordinate post-incident ergonomic and safe work training and education for employees to prevent recurrent injuries.
- Assist with Connect and Recover planning and monitoring by identifying individualized duties to help employees remain connected at work throughout their recovery process.
- Coordinate with primary care providers and case managers to support employee recovery and re-integration into the workplace.
- Build trust and positive working relationships with all parties to facilitate collaborative and sustainable recovery plans.
- Prepare or contribute to the development, evaluation, and continuous quality improvement of injury prevention policies, procedures, workflows, tools and reports.
- Maintain accurate and timely forms and documents, including updates from treatment providers and insurers.
- Create and/or update cognitive and physical job demand documents,
- Maintain confidentiality of all medical records and documentation.
- Contribute to audits, assessments, and quality assurance reviews to ensure regulatory compliance and a focus on injury prevention.
- Coordinate, direct and evaluate training performance of Safety Coaches and provide feedback.
- Assist with the recruitment of Safety Coaches.
- Develop and provide initial and continuing education and resources for Safety Coaches.
- Collaborate with internal teams to develop preventative and remedial strategies related to ergonomic and safe work procedures.
- Provide recommended training actions based on identified safety trends.
- Stay current with industry best practices, emerging research, and legislative changes related to workplace health, injury prevention, and disability management.
- Embed and promote safety in all training and discussions with employees and leaders.
- Support and promote safety initiatives and awareness.
- Participate in injury related investigations as a subject matter expert on safe movement, ergonomics, job task analysis, safe work practices and mitigation strategies.
- Integrate employee incident findings and trends into training and prevention strategies.
- Any other assigned duties.
- Bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy or another related field.
- A combination of education and experience will be considered for those who have an applicable background without a bachelor’s degree.
- Experience assessing movement and ergonomics in a field and workplace setting.
- Minimum 3 years clinical experience.
- License in good standing from the appropriate regulatory body / college within Nova Scotia.
- Knowledge of OHS, Workers Compensation and other related Nova Scotia Regulations and Acts.
