Technician Trainee – Garage Doors & Gates

Harbour Door Services has been serving Victoria and the surrounding area since 1986, providing sales and service of overhead doors, electric door operators, and residential and commercial gate systems.

Our strong reputation and track record of success led to our acquisition by Dakwakada Capital Investments (DCI) in 2022. DCI is a privately owned investment firm in Whitehorse, Yukon, representing the economic interests of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN). DCI’s growing portfolio includes overhead door companies in Kelowna, BC and Whitehorse, Yukon.

We are now seeking a Technician Trainee to join our growing team.

Position Overview

The Technician Trainee position is ideal for someone with strong mechanical aptitude who wants to learn a skilled trade. No prior garage door experience is required — we provide full training.

Candidates with experience in mechanical assembly, construction, installation of windows/doors/eavestroughs/siding, fabrication or welding will be strong fits for this role.

Working alongside experienced Technicians, you will learn to install, service, and maintain overhead doors, operators, and gate systems across residential and commercial sites. This is a hands-on role that requires reliability, willingness to learn, and a commitment to safe work practices.

Key Responsibilities

1. Installation & Service Support

  • Assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of sectional and rolling doors, operators, and gate systems.
  • Help assemble, align, and adjust tracks, springs, cables, hardware, and control components.
  • Support troubleshooting and basic diagnostics under supervision.
  • Participate in preventive maintenance activities.
  • Learn to test completed installations for proper operation, balance, and safety.

2. Technical Skill Development

  • Receive on-the-job training in:
  • Mechanical assembly and adjustments
  • Low-voltage control wiring for sensors and operators
  • Basic welding, cutting, and fabrication (as needed)
  • Learn proper use of tools, lifts, and installation equipment.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles in good working order.

3. Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all safety procedures, PPE requirements, and safe-work protocols.
  • Learn to operate scissor lifts and ladders safely for work at heights.
  • Identify and report hazards or unsafe conditions immediately.

4. Customer Service & Professionalism

  • Interact politely and professionally with customers, contractors, and other trades.
  • Represent Harbour Door with a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and clean workmanship.
  • Learn to communicate basic product information to customers.

5. Teamwork & Continuous Learning

  • Work closely with experienced Technicians, Coordinators, and Supervisors.
  • Participate in ongoing training to develop technical proficiency.
  • Contribute to a respectful, safety-focused team environment.

Requirements & Qualifications

Required

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in learning a technical trade.
  • Experience using hand and power tools in any setting (construction, carpentry, automotive, fabrication, etc.).
  • Physical capability to lift 50+ lbs and perform hands-on installation work.
  • Ability to work at heights using ladders or lifts.
  • Reliable, motivated, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean driver’s abstract.

Assets

  • Experience installing doors, windows, siding, eavestroughs, or similar building components.
  • Low-voltage wiring (security, HVAC control, telecom, automotive) experience.
  • Welding or metal fabrication experience.
  • Any construction or trades-related background.

Working Conditions

  • Based in Victoria, BC with travel to customer sites in the surrounding region.
  • Work performed indoors and outdoors in shop, construction, and residential environments.
  • Regular driving, lifting, bending, and use of power tools required.
  • Standard Monday–Friday hours, with occasional overtime or emergency calls as needed.
  • Must follow all company and site-specific safety requirements.
